16Gbs of RAM question.

I currently have 8Gbs of ram. Two 4Gb sticks. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233254 Am I fine with just buying this ram again. Will that make it 16GBs and work or do I need to just buy a 16Gb kit and sell my 8Gbs of ram. Noob question.

He already has 8gb of the other ram, it's not preferred to mix ram.

Different brands do not pose an issue, you could even buy just 1 4 GB stick if you wanted 12 GB of RAM without going full 16

Yes that RAM is really expensive, (there are 16 gb kits at that price http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231489&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=lol)

either find similar ram and mix and match or buy that)

Yeah but still, not really good to mix ram. I would just get a new 16gb set and sell the 8 that you have.

If you don't need the 16gb of ram, I would suggest waiting a couple of years when there will be many people selling off their DDR3 ram used.

you'd probably find 2x2 kits, and DDR3 would probably be like DDR2 today when that day comes.

The only reason I suggested this is that I can't find a good reason for anyone to use 16gb of ram at this moment unless you are using your computer to process large video files or doing large scientific calculations. Even when I am running computer models on my desktop I rarely use 16gb of ram unless I increase the complexity of my models.

The RAM he has now would not mix well with this because his RAM has some crazy low CAS

Mixing and matching RAM is fine as long as they are the same speed. It is ideal to have all RAM be the same, but that is not worth an extra $40

I don't think that would be a significant problem. The RAM is running in dual channel not quad channel. Isn't it possible for two sets of ram to run with two different timings without and stability problems?

ok thank you

8gb again would be no problem :).

thank you. :)

It is lol. I bought it 3 years ago and it was $60. I don't know why it went up in price.

What timings are good for CL9?

I think I need it. The titan x says it needs 16GBs of system ram recommended. Nvidia's site.

AFAIK it depends on if the BIOS supports it. My BIOS has options for CHA and CHB speed/timings

The timings all have to be the same most of the time. (motherboard dependent with only the flagships/newer supporting multiple timings)

With that said, CL7 ram is pretty rare these days as most favor speed over tight timings.

I would either buy a cl9 set and go missmatched. (your current ram will run slightly slower)

Or I would buy a 16gb kit and sell your old ram.

Honestly I have 16gb of ram just sitting in my basement (Corsair vengeance) and I'm willing to sell it, if you don't mind that it's blue.

WOW. fair enough wouldn't wanna bottleneck a video card that is probably worth more than half your system.

Sure I don't really care about colors. It would match my case. What latency is it and speed? I would prefer something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145347. How much?

Ok just got off work. http://www.geforce.com/geforce-gtx-titan-x/buy-gpu

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

PCI Express-compliant motherboard with one dual-width x16 graphics slot

One 6-pin and one 8-pin PCI Express supplementary power connector

Minimum 600 W or greater power supply

300 MB of available hard drive space

8 GB system memory (16 GB or higher recommended)

Microsoft Windows 8 and 8.1, Windows 7 or Windows Vista

It says I will be ok with 8GBs but 16GBs or more is recommended. EVGA site says this as well. I bought an EVGA titan X.
