GTA V 4K Performance. 6GB vRAM not enough?

Oshino Shinobu

So... I tried running GTA V at 4K completely maxed with Two Titan Black cards, and I hit vRAM limits with 6GB!!

Turned down AA and got around 40FPS with 4X AA.

I'm going to flesh this out as I go, but for now, this is what have got.

Here's a 4K screenshot for you

AA really shouldn't make that much of a difference at 4k.  I mean, you have so many pixels that jaggies are basically invisible.

But when you've got two titans blacks, you crank the settings, just for the sake of cranking the settings.

I'm playing around with settings now. After getting out of the first mission, the max traffic and population is taking a hit.

Remember you're not getting twice the Vram with SLI, which is what AA really hits. And even on my 42" 4kTV I never see the need for antialiasing.

More incoming. Might post some more later on.

I have to say, Rockstar have gone over the top with using every key on the keyboard. Press H to turn on headlights... Yeah, it makes sense, but you'll have to take your hand off the mouse or off WASD to do it.

Let us know please. Guess I will be getting the Titan X. Did not know GTA V would use 6GBs vram. Where is that guy that said it would not use more than 3.5Gbs. What does it use at 1080p maxed out.

I'm seeing a theme here. AA kills frame rate. Nothing new there. At 4k I turn it all off anyway, even fxaa. I also disable motion blur and dof if the option is there. Sometimes lower ambient Occlusion and soft shadows too as I find it hard to see much of a difference there sometimes. As long as I get high textures and smooth gameplay. Doesn't have to be a solid 60fps, as long as the frame rate isn't erratic.

R9 290 @ Stock, i5-4670K @ 4.3Ghz

3840x2160

all Gameplay during daytime.

Max Settings, no MSAA, AMD shadows

Sandy Shores: 16-20 FPS

Los Santos: 19-23 FPS

Cable Lift Ride: 16-26 FPS

VRAM: 3837 MB

with MSAA 2-4x: +400MB

High Settings, no MSAA

Sandy Shores: 40-60 FPS

Los Santos: 50-60 FPS

Cable Lift Ride: 40-64 FPS

VRAM: 3751 MB

I suspect that the game just takes all available VRAM (or pools it) at clears it as needed. Which explains why max settings VRAM usage almost never changes while high settings slowly climbs and holds at that maximum. That would also explain why people are seeing very high vram usage on cards that have more than 6GB, it always seems to conform to the available size.

But at 2160p max settings with MSAA I can confirm that it uses about 4500-ish MB.

So Titan X & Titan Z are your only real options atm.

I game at 4K, on a GTX 980, and I find the smoothest gameplay is having MSAA turned off, and setting target frames per second to 50. This allows me to have almost all other settings maxed out and still have smooth gameplay.

I have a GTX980 and at 1080p with MSAAx2 (MFAA enabled in control panel) and most things at very high MSI Afterburner shows about 3.4gigs of vram usage.
