Used gpu

I'm going to build a pc soon and i was going to buy a hd 7770 but someone is selling a used sapphire 6870 which is 10-20 euros cheaper than a new hd 7770.The card does not have any warranty but he is offering me to test it first. What are the basic things i should test?Should i go for it?I know that the 6870 has more tdp than the 7770,so will a corsair 430w be enough for the hd 6870 and a phenom ii x4 965?

depends on how much stress was put on the 6870, if it was OCed, and if it was regularly cleaned for dest and stuff

heres a comparison, the 6870 gets ~10fps more than the 7770 http://anandtech.com/bench/Product/540?vs=536

the 6870 also requires a 500w psu so i guess 7770

My build is exactly Phenom 965 and a 7770 with the corsair CX430. OC wise i could get my cpu to 4.0 and my gpu to 1100. With this config you will max out everything on 1280x1024 with 35+ frames(depends on the game ofc), not sure about bigger ress thou. What is your monitor?

I got an old monitor with 1280x1024 res and a tv 22" with 1680x1050 so i guess i will play on the tv but i don't mind if i play on medium settings.

Don't know about 1680x1050 , but it will be close to high imo. You can probably max some games with a good frame rate. What kind of games you play?

7770 i dont trust second hand cards even though it comes from a friend

i agree, that 10-20 is nothing if in 6 months that 6870 dies, and ya gotta buy a whole new gpu

Based on my exp on the 7770 you can run all the games you want and i have like 50-70 FPS in Bioshock Infinite on max at 1280x1024, you can probably run it max at 1680x1050 with around 30-40 fps then. Test and see. Thou on your main monitor (not the TV) you are guaranteed maxed out everything :)
