Which GPU(s) for 4k?

I'd go for the titan X, But if you wanna save some money, dual 8gb 290X's cost about 200$ less and offer very slightly less performance.

If you are ok going with amd gpu, I think r9 290x should be good. Depends on your location. For my country, 2 x 290x will cost lesser (way lesser) than those 3 options you listed.

 

Other than the extreme heat I'm getting from those cards, the fps I get in game are pretty ok. I usually play Dota 2 (without aa and vsync) and my average fps is slightly over 100.

they perform better yes, but the titan x is a single GPU

that means if a game or program can only use one GPU it will get a lot more performance than just a 980

also you dont need to worry about issues with SLI scaling cause there will be no SLI

 

plus it will use less power and look more elegant in a system

 

also there are some games using over 6GB of vram now, so 12GB would be more beneficial in the long run than 4

If you already have a good PSU and case with nice airflow for SLI, you dont mind the extra power consumption and heat output, and if the games you plan playing scale well in SLI go with 2x980, if not a Titan X would be my choice. (and if money is not an issue add another Titan in the future!)

2x gtx 980 if those are your only choises. But for 4k i would definely consider 290x since its a lot cheaper. But if money not a problem for you why not gtx 980 sli.

looking at benchmarks - imo Titan x is not "good" enough for 4k - its almost there... once heavily overclocked. but for the money I would expect a better experience.

 

SLI 980's / SLI titan x are "good enough" but then you have to worry about SLI problems.

 

wait for AMD 3xx series, see how that performs. I hope it will be the first single GPU to offer a really good experience with 4k.

 

note: good enough is delivering 60fps on v.high/ultra settings. (no one wants medium/high on a 4k... no one)

 

note note: the 295x2 is slightly faster than an overclocked titan, but again multi-gpu setups in my experience are a PITA.

What games that a single 290X ultra oc'ed cant handle doesn't use SLI/Crossfire.

People need to consider that 4GB is not nearly enough for 4k gaming. I mean, they're good for old games I guess but for the upcoming games? I would say no. But feel free to prove me wrong since that is just how I think and feel about 4k gaming.
