Hi all, I'm buying a 4K Samsung panel this week. I've currently got the ROG Swift- which the 980 can handle with ease @ultra settings, however, I know 4K is a massive step up. Was just wondering if a 980, at least for the time being, would be suitable for playing most titles @4K at medium-ish settings?- can I test this out by using DSR and scaling my monitor up to 4K?

Cheers guys.

mid, yeah, if you want to go high settings you'll need two 980s.

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

Cheers. I'm considering a Titan X if I'm able to sell my current 980, as I've got an mITX system.

why would you buy a 4K panel when you have the ROG Swift?

1440x2560=3,7 megapixel

2160x3840=8,3 megapixel

That is more than double, and is it really worth it to go to 4K? because your framerate will half, and the only real single gpu card ready for 4K is the titan X, altho the R9 295x2 (dual gpu) is better and costs less

You could probably test it out by using DSR but I don't think getting a 4k display right now is worth it. A 980 at medium settings in most AAA games should be fine, but I would enjoy Ultra at 1440p just as easily. For most average games like LoL, you should run smoothly though.

follow thine topic!

i have two 980s and with DSR they perform very well with DSR to 4k in SLI.

on assasin's creed rogue i got 45-48 avg. FPS without SLI, once i modded it to accept SLI i got 62(capped) FPS.

again, this is DSR, not true 4k.

I'm gonna use both the ROG Swift and the Samsung- I mostly want 4K for Netflix whilst gaming, but it would be nice to test out higher res every now and then.

Well, considering that you live in the US, I bet the postage from Aus would probably end up costing more than the GPU! :)

UPDATE: I just tried out Battlefield Hardline using DSR @3840x2160 using Medium settings and got around 80 FPS on Multiplayer... If this is anything true to what I'd get using 4K I'm happy.

I can even play at 4k with my 290 at very desirable settings in Battlefield 4. Not 80 FPS but around 60 usually.

I know many people say you need at least two GPUs at 4k, etc. , but at 4k you can turn off any AA and I still play on high settings in Battlefield 4 and I am totally fine with 50+ fps.

If you just want to play at 4k every once in a while and test it and maybe just enjoy the beauty and not go for super fast paced games, don't get another GPU, but get a good 4k panel with g-sync so lower dips will not affect you much.

Haha yeah ik. But, is DSR essentially accurate to actually running the game @4K?

Your GPU is rendering the game at full 4k resolution and then it is scaled down, so yeah it is the same work load.

Yeah I think BF4 is actually more demanding than Hardline lol- even at 1440P I was surprised with my FPS in relation to what I got on BF4. I would go ahead and buy that new Acer 4K GYSNC panel but I don't really want to fork out another $1000 like I did with the Swift a few months ago. TBH the main reason I actually want it is simply Netflix/4K content for when I'm gaming, or even just for productivity reasons.

Then keep your GPU. I would take higher res over Ultra settings any day. Even on my crappy 1080 panel, 4k looks so much better than cranking up the regular settings. I alsways play at 200% resolution scale because even on my 1080 panel it makes everything look so much sharper and not as washed out as with AA:

EDIT: Also I jsut tested what I sad before again. I get well above 60 fps with everything at high besides texture quality which is at ultra and no AA. Just in a fire or a big explosion it dips to maybe 45, but not any lower. Works for me.

I play all my games at 4k medium settings with a gtx770.. so a 980 would easily run most games at high.

4k only becomes super demanding when you add loads of AA and have shadows at a ridiculous level that's not of any real advantage.

I get about 60fps on bf hardline with all medium settings bar low mesh and shadows but high details.
