i7 4790k stock cooling?

The general consensus I've found is this CPU runs hot, but how hot is acceptable? Running right now with practically nothing running on my computer, it's sitting at 30-32C, but when I played Final Fantasy 14, it was sitting at around 73-76C. Under the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility Stress Test, it sat around 83-87C, and even though I didn't notice, it peaked at 90C according to the graph. My case is currently open, and I'm using the stock CPU fan that was provided and no overclocking has been done to any part of this PC, but with these temps am I going to have to get a better CPU cooler?

80-90c at load is about as high as you'd want to go. Your temps seem fine.

You don't NEED an aftermarket cooler, per se, but it will drastically improve temperatures and will allow you to overclock. You have an unlocked CPU, so your intentions are to overclock or you were uninformed at the time of purchase.

I would say you should expect to buy an aftermarket cooler when buying an overclockable chip for starters.

Temps do seem high though, probably a seating issue.

I intended this computer to be the best I could for the price I set, but in another few months to be able to upgrade it with better cooling and overclock. I just wanted to make sure it was okay for now until I got the money and moved into my new room in about 6-10 weeks.

Hi all,

I have a i7 4790k and they do, and are meant to run hot. According to intel themselves they can happily run at 100c so those temps are fine (I inquired with the custom computer specialists when I purchased my rig as I noticed these temperatures). A quick note though; the stock coolers are rubbish and you can get after market coolers for around £25 so it is worth doing

Sorry, but 100 degrees is absurdly hot and one should never let their CPU run at that temperature.

That is exactly what I said to the technician at dinopc but they ensured me that it is okay to run at that temperature =0

I did still purchase an after market cooler to make sure I got the most out of the cpu.
