Phenom II x4 940 with one broken pin - is it worth?

Hi! My friend asked me to build him a PC capable of soft-medium gaming and mostly web browsing/work. He already has a mobo with AM2 socket. We found most of the parts very cheaply, we even managed to get a Corsair PSU for veeeery cheap, and now I'm searching for a CPU. I found a good deal on a Phenom II x4 940, but with one broken off pin. I've seen an old LinustechTips video, where Linus managed to "revive" an AMD CPU just by putting the broken pin directly into the socket. He said that there are some pins that actually aren't as important and CPU can work without them. So my question is: If I have an older AMD CPU that I don't want to use, so I can reuse a pin from it, is it worth to get the Phenom II x4 940? How sure can I be that it will work by using the same method as Linus?

No, there is no guarantee it will work. Just because Linus can get it to work, does not mean it will work for everyone. He was just lucky that it worked.

Thank you! Maybe I will just try to contact the guy and maybe ask him to try to get it to work.

Don't bother, find another CPU without the broken pin.

Ok, I will try. I tried to find a good CPU all day yesterday, but where i live people don't sell many AMD CPU's, but when they do, they are overpriced very much. I even checked if I could buy it from UK maybe or US or whatever, but shipping prices are high, so it's not a good idea.

It's not really dirt cheap, but it's much cheaper than usually, so I won't risk probably.

i actually got a really garbage amd sempron 3200 or something like that can ship it if u cover the whatever royal mail would charge me for the envelope, it is really crap and probably wont really do much (tried unlocking the cores and it doesn't work, nor is it a great overclocker)

its just sitting in the box collecting dust, shipping the heatsink would probably cost quite a bunch though.

once again it is really not a good cpu. not even sure if its 3200, i know its just a single core turdle. just sayin. also only tried it on am3+ motherboard, so might not even work with am2. just an offer if you're desperate for any cpu.

good luck on on finding something fitting though.

AMD makes triple core CPUs. Some AMD cpus can be unlocked.

Thank you for the offer, I appreciate it very much, but my friend wanted to play some games, maybe not the hardcore, new ones, but he decided that he would like to have a 4 core CPU, because games he want to play maybe aren't graphically stunning, but they have a lot of CPU draining stuff.

Don't even bother there is no point as if it doesnt work you will have to buy another and charge your friend extra besides it is better to buy new or referbed parts that are electrical

How much does it cost? I wouldn't go higher than 15 dollars.

Exchanging it to US Dollars it's around $40, and the fully working ones are for $65-$70. In USD the price doesn't look that bigger, but belive me, in my currency it is a difference.

I have some Phenoms on the AM2(+) socket with that pin missing (prior owner tried putting it in an AM3 board). They still work fully.

However this is a native AM3 CPU, I'd try haggle down the price unless he can prove it still works.
