My head hurts multicore!

Oke so i really don't understand it anymore evryone does not recommend amd fx series cpu's because they have a low ipc but they do have 8 cores and an i5 has 4 cores but an higher ipc right? but my question is with mantle and dx12 is an fx not waaaay more future proof?

Nope, because even with them not all games will support that many cores. The Core series has almost double the power per clock/core. Thus will be the same power at the same clock speed with less cores.

an i5 has stronger single core performance compared to any FX series chip.

As games focus on single core performance a lot more, i5's are better.

 

They also have 4 cores, which is plenty at the moment. Not sure what DX12 will do about it, but I doubt it will change much

Basically, I always use this train of thought as to why they are inferior.

 

Having many, weak cores might be better for some highly distributed, optimized workflow may benefit from eight cores.  

 

But the reality is this.  By the time that many cores are required, I guarantee those will be too weak and outdated to be of any use.

 

I see it this way.  If the leader in CPU manufacturing, Intel, is still making most of their consumer chips as quad cores, then there must be a reason for such.  The reason is that most programs, aside from professional / server applications simply cannot benefit from that many cores.

 

That is of course on top of the massive TDP of the chips compared to Intel.

Future proof is not a thing with anything. It's a misconception. Nothing is.

 

Secondly, dx12 allows for the POTENTIAL to use more cores. That doesn't force developers to use them. In fact I'm pretty sure even dx11 allowed for pretty decent multicore optimization, but developers didn't put in the effort. Even then however intel's ipc is right around twice as high, so performance should catch up but not overtake. Besides it IS a 4 year old architecture
