Your worst experiences IT-wise. (Stupid people)

kajar9

Mine is hard to top i guess, but maybe you have had similar stories of stupid people accusing you or something like that.
Don't post something you just simply heard, but friends, relatives etc. stories are fine too.

So here goes....

I got arrested for connecting to school server via remote desktop from my laptop. And in the process teacher pretty much ripped my computer apart trying to confiscate it for evidence.

School pretty much had all computers connect to main server via remote desktop. Properly done, good setup, ran adequate.

After class forgot some project files into school computer, logged in on my laptop to get the files while in cafeteria.

So our Informatics teacher (only office tools knowhow actually, but whatever) walks past and notices... starts convo like really nice, interested tone...
Fooled by her... thinking she want's to do the same and show her how I did it like a nice gesture.

Suddenly starts ripping at my computer tearing off the screen (the hinge was a bit broken before) and rips the screen connector.

Screaming about confiscating for evidence. I let go to prevent further damage to computer. She orders me and get's security to escort me to principal. No resitance.

Police get's called, go to PD, get questioned. Parents were freaking furious, at that point they believed the school. Police threatening with felony computer abuse and fraud charges unless I confess and do plea deal despite my fruitless explainations.
They (The PD) were going to go to my place to get my other computer, but after a few hours of banging my head on the desk trying to talk sense into completely computer illiterate morons, the school IT guy came to my rescue thankfuly. It was he's day off too... thank goodness.

FFS I even had asked the IT guy permission and it was set up for students to be able to remotely connect although not used. We had access to only our personal accounts and it was properly secured and all.

So that happened...

Happened in high school year before graduation in 2007
Now now I am of age, I go out drinking with the IT guy, show him my programming skills I learn in uni now, he gives me some of he's assignments for a more than a generous pay.

So ...I almost got labeled a criminal for doing basic shit, but pro I got a nice friend out of it.

Post your stories too!

Damn, you make 2007 sound like the stone age when it comes to ubiquity of personal computers in school. I would be tempted to try to press charges

Had to buy new laptop, got the teacher to pay 1700$ damages + court fees after 3 months, all charges dropped on me.

Our country doesn't have much of a sue-ing thing going on, so that was the best I got.

The teacher wasn't fired for some reason.

Going into an IT shop to get a laptop upgraded, and having them ignore me when I told them that its chipset only supported 2GB of DDR2, even though 4GB could be installed. They ignored me, the computer wouldn't even boot, and they simply left 1 2GB stick in it instead of using 2x1GB, which I'd asked for as I like redundency (ended up using the single 2GB stick in the laptop I refurbished for my grandmother, and used 2x1GB sticks from a 2008 Toshiba satelite that died).

Actually, we had state funded program to supply students with personal computers back then, but that was still in only larger schools.

Our school got only projectors, smart boards and similar from that program at that time.
