Why do people overclock?

overclocking is pointless now in newer chips (in my opinion post Ivy bridge and later) .

CPU have reach a point where they are so powerful (for most users) that the extra 1Ghz overclock will see little improvement in day to day tasks.

Save your money and get the non K.

I've never purchased a cpu and not overclocked it. I love tinkering with things. Hell even my cell phone is overclocked.

I do it for the science, celebrity and for the ladies of course.

You can also get free hardwares if your any good at it

Overclocking is making its way into mainstream Esports

Keep your game tight.

Technically it's not a Esport since you're doing stuff to something that is physical.. You just need to use virtual stuff to do it :D

I'd love to go crazy with overclocking with like LN2 and stuff. That would be fun. I like how hwbot has a section for WinRAR.

For gaming only its not really worth it cos your gpu bound most of the time.

When a game is CPU bound/limited (Only using a couple of cores or not fully multithreaded) then overclocking to boost single core performance can have decent gains too.

Adding 25-30% of an overclock GREATLY increases performance and lowers video editing time and INTENSIVE tasks by a great deal.

When chasing the ultimate performance for content creation its totally worth it.

Anyone who says it isn't worth it obviously isn't working their cpu to 100% to require the boost in processing power.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Some games much more from overcloking than others. Tf2 is one of those, It is so freaking cpu intensive compared to most games its ridiculous. Pretty much all source engine games benefit from that

To ask why we overclock is to ask why the leaves fall. It is in our nature. Perhaps, there is a better question. Why do we overclock? To power our Games, and render our videos… To prove our Epeens are biggest, and bring others to shame. For my kind, the true question is: What is worth replacing if/when we kill it?

Day to day tasks for some Gamers/content creators is still doing video editing and hardcore tasks where your CPU is pushed to the limits,.. and a 25-30% OC certainly boosts that to a great degree.

Multithreaded Content creation is where you see the most benefit, and even some average users do this on a day to day.

Overclocking a CPU is about mitigating the minimum fps dips that are experienced. Almost all CPUs won't throttle a GPU to sub 60 average fps. Keeping the CPU related frame dips above 30 fps is preferable, above 60 is even better.

It makes software run faster. It makes CPU-heavy games like Crysis 3 smoother. It's not much fun to play a slideshow. Today, you have to pay extra for the privilege of overclocking, so you mostly just get what you pay for. It wasn't always like that; in the past, you could grab a cheap CPU and overclock it to match much more expensive CPUs.

because for me with my 8320 going from 3.5 to 4.6ghz is over 30% faster rendering etc and if i come across a single threaded game that doesnt require a pentium 4 itll help with that too (you can guess how many ive seen then).
i can get a 720 in cinebench and rival an intel cpu in (rendering and transcoding) that costs twice as much...
if i had an 8320e it'd technically be 43% overclock and seeing as anyone that needs an i5k or fx8 or other high end cpu they'll likely have a good board and cooling anyway so its no extra money.
for AAA titles its largely pointless as the best game engines (not unity etc) evenly distribute threads and are gpu bound and hence even when declocked have no real performance difference.
