4850 Update R9 270 ?

Go to solution Solved by GraemeVolvo,

Hi Thank you everyone for your posts,

I've ended up with a PowerColor Radeon R9 270X  now i'm sure there are better out there however it came bang on my hoped budget £80 delivered and I'm sure you'd all agree I will see an improvemnt on my 4850! :)

My current monitor is 1680 x 1050 but that will probably change to a 1080 at some point (when it dies tbh)

Motherboard and processor next I guess.

Again Many Thanks

Hi

Ok so I'm slowly getting into games again on my PC I have 4850 and I've been happy enough with it but its staring to fail, I've just started TitanFall and The bureau and its time to start doing bring my PC a little more upto date!!

Budget wise i think if i hunt I could grab a second hand R9-270 just about, the 4850 has done me well.

My plan is later on to change the Motherboard and processor I guess to a quad core i5 (currently an e8400 stable at 4.2Ghz with 8GB RAM) but since the card is starting to get too hot and showing artifacts then It'll be first on te list

please bear in mind Low budget and I play all these games on the easy easy setting lol.

Any advice is much appreiated, I've looked about but it seems My 4850 is so old that its hard to get a sensible upgrade path

Thanks

the r9 270 is a great budget card. it overclocks fairly well for only having a single 6 pin power connector and it runs pretty well. you'd be looking at medium/high to high settings in most titles at 1080p (provided your cpu is up to par).

if you can find a sapphire i'd recommend that one. mine at stock clocks rarely if ever breaks 70 degrees. but any 270 is going to be good  really. just be careful when buying used. a lot of these used 270s were used for bit coin mining.

I had the Sapphire 270X and it can play most titles on 1080p High-Ultra with usually always above 30-35fps+

And Medium-High spec pushing 50-60fps+

It's capable for much enjoyment,.. but some titles may require you to disable/lower settings to achieve 50fps+

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Thanks Sounds like what I'm after :)

quick check .. I thought I had it figuered out but assuming same price (give or take) would I be right in thinking

HD7970 then HD7950 the R9 270 ?

I'm thinking all of these are basicaly twice as fast as my old card, and give or take not a million miles apart from each other in performance ?

Try looking for refurbished cards on ebay. You can get 770s and 7970s for as low as 150 EUR here with a warranty. Just don't be too picky about the cooler and be patient. Something will pop up. Just a couple of days ago I almost bought a 770 2GB with the MSI TF IV with a 2 year warranty. Wanted it for a friend.(not giving up my 290 ;-)  )

So yeah, and the R9 270 is also an older card, so it is not like you buy older chips when you look at the 7970, 770 etc.

At 1080p its not the best card .

But at under that resolution its pretty boss.

It actually is, (Esp with a small OC) you MAY have to lower settings on some games however. FC4 for a random example, 35fps Ultra SMAA,.. but 50fps with VeryHigh/High mix...

Thief - How is 65FPS not good? Even with those decent settings... you could do better by lowering some details if your aiming for higher...

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Its very good , that was my point.

I run 1440x900 and this card is absolute ownage.

Every single setting was maxed out in thief and i got the 65 fps which is perfect for my 60 hz display.
