Asus DGX vs MSI Z87-GD65 Onboard Audio

Thunderjolt

So, I've been wondering. What would be better audio wise? Would it be better to just use the onboard audio of the Mobo since it's got Creative Sound Blaster built in or to buy an Asus DGX or a similar sound card?

Setup: i5 4670k @ 4.2 Ghz, Corsair H100i Cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB Ram @ 1600 Mhz, MSI Z87-GD65 Motherboard, Corsair GS700 2013 edition PSU, MSI GTX 770 Lightning, Samsung EVO 120 SSD + 2TB&1TB Seagate Barracudas, BenQ XL2411T Monitor, Sennheiser HD 598 Headphones + AntLion ModMic 4.0

I wouldn't bother with a sound card, I'd just go straight to a minimum of a usb dac, or just use onboard.

Will work for electronic components and parts

+1 for onboard.  As long as your headphones and speakers get loud enough and aren't full of static, why bother?

Sound Card will always give better sound performance then ANY onboard solution (they are after all just codec on a chip) !

Quite a few mixed responses. Some say that the onboard is alright and others say that it's terrible,

I'll be hopefully getting an ATH-AD700 to go with the DGX. So you're saying that the onboard is not as good as the DGX?

Well, I was wondering if the onboard is good enough if not better than the DGX because I use my headphones 24/7 and would like the extra sound quality for music etc.

The Maximus VI Hero apparently has very good audio onboard but I know near nothing with sound cards. It's practically the same as DGX right? To be honest, I'm fine paying a tiny bit more to buy a decent sound card if the audio on the GD65 isn't that great. Any recommendations that are around £50 or less?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I would take the cheapest of usb dacs over a sound card.

if it weren't for me owning 2 dacs already, and SMT being a pita to solder, I'd probably have a grubdac or gamma 1/2 right now.

A $300 soundcard does not compare to a $40 soundcard.

OP, you will not see a huge benefit from a soundcard unless your headphones don't get loud enough. It'd be better to add that money to your headphone budget. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1910718
