Can't decide between 980 and 970

Regank

I can't decide to buy a cheaper 970 or get the 980. The problem with the RAM on the 970s kind of scared me to buy one. I know that most people won't really see a difference but I just want to steer clear of it and avoid it all together. If I were to buy a 980, is there thought to be a price drop anytime soon?

Thanks! :D

980's price isn't moving. Get 2 970s, that's what I did.

To note though, even at 4K, maxed out on everything, those 2 cards only stuttered (and minor stutter) with the ultra textures on SoM

I only forsee a pricedrop during AMD's 300 series release, or possibly a retailer sale.

Nothing beats benchmarks, and don't let the .5 GB Ram issue steer you from buying a still amazing graphics card.

It's gonna be hard to convince Nvidia to let retailers drop prices since they just so happen to have a sale event. Nvidia controls the price floor for the cards as far as I can remember

Are you going for 1080p, 1440p or 4K? Also budget?

I could probably budget both :) 2 970s or 980. Probably 1080p but not for sure yet, the 4k monitors are so pretty but still too expensive :(

Either of those is overkill for 1080p honestly. One 970 would be plenty for that.

Edit: and @Regank you can always add another one! I run at 4K with both of my cards.

I was probably only going to get one 970 but plan on upgrading in the future, if I added a 970 in the future would it make a very big difference? Also, would a 980 be worth it now to get but upgrade in the future too?

Depends. If you want to blow money, sure, a 980 is nice. I'd recommend a 970 and add another later is great. The scaling works pretty dang well in most games.

Don't worry about the VRAM debacle on the 970. The issue was more about false advertisement and not the card itself. Remember the 780ti (last gen's top tier card) had only 3 gigs initially and nobody thinks that card is useless now even on high end gaming.

If you think these companies exist for any other reason you're gonna be disappointed my dear. CAVEAT EMPTOR"

I'd rather see you get two 970  or  two 290x's

Honestly the 980 isn't THAT much better than the 970, but it's SO much more. The VRAM isn't an issue and I have no idea why people are still talking about this, but I never go over 3gb of VRAM and I play on 5760x1080p and I Do SLI 970. Get SLI 970
