Buying a CPU/Motherboard off ebay

Mandrew

CPU

Its an i5 that is "like new" and was never overclocked

The user has a perfect 19 seller ratings and no bad ones, and about 150 perfect buyer ratings and no bad ones here either

The ebay money back guarantee is "enabled"(for lack of a better word) so if it is/broken not working i can return it(hopefully)

MOTHERBOARD

Its and asus z77 that was used with the CPU previously mentioned as a multi-media PC

Same as above

The parts might work at the start but they have the potential of failing you in the near future. After that you will be unable to return it and the money saved would be useless. Just understand the risks of dealing with used parts as you do not know the history of your parts.

IT is your own choice. Buying used parts can also be a great deal for something otherwise unaffordable.

Imo, the price difference mostly is so big that you can get 2 used parts for the cost of one new part. Also CPUs fail very rarely so I doubt that it will fail on him anytime soon. No used parts have failed for me before they become useless

The problem is that you dont know how well the user treated the product in the past. Perhaps you have been lucky but it still is a risk more so than new parts. I personally do not like to take any risks when it comes to PC parts but I dont criticize people who do.
