My friend got an ASUS 780ti, 4970k, and ASUS Sabertooth Mark II for Christmas. I saw in person that the computer was put together correctly, but it crashes whenever he tries to play a game. He's tried tons of different drivers versions. The only way we could get it from crashing was to underclock it by 100 mhz and overvolt by +10 (I think it's too high but he's not having temp problems). It still occasionally crashes during Source Engine games.

Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone have a fix?

Thanks!

Thanks, I'll edit this is.

Corsair 750 or 850... Not sure what model. I'll have to ask. Sorry that's all the info I have for now.

Does this happen at all while only idling or doing anything else?

Nope. He can surf the web fine. It's just games that case the crashing.

You might check out the forums I linked for a more detailed description of the problem. :)

make sure the GPU is plugged in properly esp the PCI-E power plugs

also ask your buddy to send pictures of the PSU sticker to verify the model

A friend had this problem, the fix that worked for him is to change the global settings off of adaptive power to Prefer maximum performance.

Open Nvidia control panel

goto 3D settings

Manage 3D settings

On the Global Settings tab scroll down to Power management mode

change to Prefer maximum performance

Apply

There were several games that he was crashing on and some that he had no problem with. This is an easy change that may solve your issue however, it may not also.

I would try to RMA the card.

I'd try to figure out if it has something to do with the psu. Run some cpu and gpu stress test at the same time and see if something happens. If not its probably not the psu but some problem with the 780ti

Thanks for all the replies. I saw that the correct cables were going to the gpu (pcie label) so Ill have him try the adaptive power thing.

Update:

>RM 850

>**Only crashes Valve games** (running the underclock)

Friend is lazy POS and would rather buy games than giving himself stability in games. Refuses to buy new power supply or RMA card.
I dont get it. .-. guh

Case closed I guess.

Good job Valve. Your engine sucks!

Glad you found the issue... Not familiar with Source Engine's issues, Have you tried running Steam as Admin?
