AMD FX 6300 Black Edition computer upgrade

Go to solution Solved by Nikolithebear,

Do not upgrade, at that point its basically a downgrade, if you are to uprade go grab an i5 4690k or a i7 4790k.

I've been thinking of getting a new CPU and motherboard for a while now, and im interested in the AMD FX 6300 and the MSI 990FXA-GD65 motherboard.

My current rig contains:

  • CPU - Intel i5 2320
  • Motherboard - asus P8H61-MX
  • RAM - 8gb 1600Mhz corsair xms3
  • GPU - msi twin frozer III GTX 660

So would it be worth upgrading to the FX 6300 (and mothetboard), and would I be able to overclock the cpu with that motherboard?

Cheers

Alex (Toggleguy)

Moving from an i5 to the FX6300 is actually a downgrade...

1. It's not worth the upgrade

2. The 2500k can handle a Titan.

Yeah.. I thought so.. I want to get a newer card (e.g. GTX 970), but my motherboard has only PCI-E 2.0, would the GTX 970 be bottlenecked.. or is it still the same as it used to be (with older cards).

Getting a i5-3550 would be a easier upgrade since it should work with your current motherboard. It would give about 20% higher performance.

The i5 2320 and FX 6300 has pretty similar performance, You would get a little better multitasking performance, But when it comes to Gaming you will more likely lose a little.

That is a downgrade.

I don't always have time to study, but when I do, I don't.

PCIe 2.0 isn't a bottleneck. And BTW the FX series only supports PCIe 2.0 lol

I'd say get a 4th gen i5 instead of a 6300. the 6300 is an old processor and although the specs look better, they really aren't due to the poor architecture compared to intel. I'd say the 6300 wouldn't be that much of an upgrade if at all. The 4th gen i5 would be a much better option if you can afford it. The 4690K will cost about $230-$260 depending on where you get it, not to mention a new motherboard.

It really shouldn't bottleneck it that bad or even at all to my knowledge (someone correct me if Im wrong)

you'd get a little bit more performance in rendering etc but if you wanted to do that just get a xeon e5-1230, otherwise id say just overclock your chip and run a 105mhz base clock that'll get you 3.15ghz base clock with a 3.46ghz turbo
upgrading to another i5 wont matter.
both wont bottleneck in well threaded games, both will bottleneck (but not to a point that matters) in single threaded games.
ets2 only uses 2 of my 8 threads at 95% and i still get 200fps on maximum settings, my pentiumK doesnt perform any different in world of tanks...
cinebench r11.5
i5 2400 (bit faster than a 2320)=5.07
fx6300@3.6ghz (so a fair way to go)=5.03

single core
1.06 for amd
1.33 for the 2120
intel leads by 25% but the amd has another 25% or so to go(4.5ghz) and yes you can overclock with all amd boards.

The 2500k can handle a Titan.

Well the IPC is slow by today's standards so in bandwidth heavy scenarios there's a bottleneck also the single thread performance is around 20-30% slower than a 4690K so it can handle a Titan in gaming no problem but the the actual use case of a Titan (content creation) it seriously lacks the power required. But I get your point, it's not a bottleneck in gaming.

Yea man, of course. If there really was no benefit to the Haswell/Broadwell CPUs, Intel wouldn't be making them :D

last time i checked people still play on q6600's happily yet plenty have upgraded to i5 920's, then 2500k's, then 2560k's, then 4670k's...

didnt think gaming got that demanding...

For industry use, there's a huge benefit. Gaming, not so much.
