Silicon Lottery?

Go to solution Solved by ropesend,

It refers to the fact that all chips may have different max overclocks.  For example you could build two identical systems both with a 4790k in them.  One might OC to over 5Ghz, and the other may not  get past 4.7Ghz all on the same settings.  You might say that you did well in the silicon lottery for the 1st chip and badly with the second.

i see people mention the silicon lottery when they overclock. What does it mean? I know computer parts have silicon in them but...?

Every chip is differnet, SL means that some 4790Ks may go up to 6Ghz some only to 4,2

It basically means how well the CPU you have will overclock. Certain chips (or batches of chips) will overclock better than others.

Thefore it could be regarded as a "lottery".

All the CPUs with same series are some times not same. Some overclocks better and some not.

If you got a good overclocking chip means, SILICON loTTerY!

Think of it like this.

You bake cookies. You put the same amount of dough for each cookie, but they all turn out different sizes.

That's what the silicone lottery is like. Even though it's the same chip (cookie dough) the chips overclock better or worse (cookie size)

Some companies actually test to find good chips, such as gigabyte's "gauntlet" process.

SHIT THATS COOL
