why?

what difference does it make if you have 2x3 TB or 1x5TB?

you'll have more space and it'll probably be significantly cheaper.

unless you want to have 15+ 5TB drives Id on't see any issue with going 2x3TB drives instead.

oh i forgot to say

i need raid 1

i currently have two 2tb drives in raid 1 (2 TB usable almost full)

so 4 of 5 TB would be great in raid 1

<p>The reason that one seagate drive is so cheep is because it has a short warranty, is only 5400rpm, and just generally unperforms compared to other 4TB drives. It would be perfect for media storage, but if you're doing anything that is IO intensive like photo or video work, look elsewhere.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>And for the guy asking why you'd want a a higher capacity drive, the reason is that the denser a drive is, the cheeper it is per TB (<strong>generally</strong>), and this is all just because of aerial density of the magnetic disks and the fact that the controller, pcb, read head, and casing cost money. If you look at 4x1TB WD blacks, they're 90$ a pop or so, versus a 4TB black at 290$. That's 70$ cheaper for 4TB, which quickly adds up, plus you save space and power. And it's very easy to fill up that much data if you like to store high-quality digital media ... go look at this thread if you think 4TB is a lot <img class="bbc_emoticon" src="http://linustechtips.com/main/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.png" title=" :P" /> <a href="http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/21948-ltt-10tb-storage-show-off-topic/">http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/21948-ltt-10tb-storage-show-off-topic/

<p>Edit: Oh, and as aerial density goes up, sequential performance does too. Granted many smaller drives in raid is faster, but if you're space constrained then this is still a good thing.</p>

As long as it has  UEFI, then yes (in other words, any modern board will)

Ah Today Iearned.

If I want to put 4TB drives in my old rig (don't have UEFI) I must use raid controller / Raid Card?

Just to add...

I know Western Digital started incorporating 1TB platters into their hard drives(at least with their Caviar Blue series). I bet WD will be implementing something soon with 1TB platters if they aren't already, which they could increase to 5TB, but it would be heavy and a bit of a powerhouse compared to other hard drives!
