Star Citizen - Prep your drives since reports are that game will be 100gb big

Saw today on finnish gaming site that Star Citizen might be lovely 100gb install on launch. Even small patches are 2-6 gigs and biggest 14-20 gigs

Its the biggest game ive ever met. 2nd being Titanfall.

If only i have the hardware to run this. Meh ill stick with Space Engineers

Currently 20gb patches are the entire game just downloaded ATM but I'm not surprised by this

Well i bought my new 1 TB HDD just for Star citizen.

 

 

EDIT: Untill now. Now my entire system is on it. Becuse my windows on my primary disk crashed for some unkown reason. Happy i have star citizen on that disk already becuse it take 5+ hrs for me to download it.

This is baseless speculation. The patches that we currently get contain no optimizations, compressed texture packs or any size reduction tricks that final releases have. It's a friggin alpha, they don't need to concern themselves with matters of player convenience at this point.

 

Secondly, it was mentioned in the last AV that the new procedural damage system allows them to need way less textures per ship. They mentioned as an example that the entire hornet texture pack can be reduced from its current 100MB  to about 14 because with procedural damage, they don't need to have separate textures for each damage state of each component of each ship.

 

 

It will still be huge, of course. But I doubt that it will be 100 gigs.

It will still be huge, of course. But I doubt that it will be 100 gigs.

My guess is the final number hits around 50. Still the largest game I own, but it has definitely earned its space in my drive.
