The GTX 970 Vram has been brought up way too much now, is it not clear enough that the 970 is a great product?

Nearly all who bring it up have not got experience with the 970.

So please... let us bring it to a stop, just direct those who are after information to the many topics on it already.

Thanks.

Set your DSR to 2x or above native resolution via the Nvidia control panel, and then tell me it's not a problem.

Also the false advertising thing, which continues.

At 1440P on dual 980's???

How am I supposed to test that... and I don't need such a feature.

Was talking about the 970....DSR is for running a higher resolution than the monitor you actually have, i.e. 1440 resolution on a 1080p monitor. Which looks better than just maxed graphics at 1080p.

Edit: Also, you do have DSR.

Hey i know this might be odd to say but i think of the 970 this way.

Rather than a "Chopped down 980 with 3.5gb vram and less Processors and such" maybe in a way, Or basically "4GB but take away 512Mb Vram" think of it like this "3GB Card With an extra 512mb vram"

I guess it's handy if you are one of those streamer people that likes to have a smaller screen on the side for reading stream chats :), 3GB for your gaming 512mb for the other screen, who knows.

Bit like the glass half full and half empty saying :3.

Or maybe in a way "GTX 780 With Benefits"  (like power consumption, heat and all). so maybe a neato 780.

But the response was "YOU DIDNT GIVE US 4 GB NOW I HATE YOU" but the response would have been non existent if it was only 3gb. Society at its finest.

According to what I've been told on this forum, it is exactly a chopped down 980.

And it's more like 3.5gb of GDDR5 Vram, with an extra .5gb DDR3 Vram.

Which is what pisses me off, they continue to say "4gb of GDDR5 Vram" when the extra .5 runs at system memory speed, which in my mind disqualifies it as being "GDDR5"

As long as people keep talking about the 970, the VRam issue is going to be bundled in with the discussion (note that I said "issue" and not "problem" because it has yet to become a problem). Whether people like to hear about it or not is irrelevant.

If someone created a thread asking people to stop talking about the difficulties of cooling the 290/x, is that a reasonable request? It doesn't effect the performance of the card, or the actual heat output, but it is something that needs to be discussed whenever someone asks if they should buy a 290/x. Likewise, when someone asks whether they should buy a 970, the VRam should always be at least mentioned because it is relevant, especially for future longevity.

These companies can defend themselves, people need to stop white knighting for them.

Yeah it is a Chopped down 980 xD.

maybe the same as buying a set of 4 tyres and finding the 2nd one is more so worn, but the seller never told you....you probably would want a refund of sorts.

but well maybe that idea is more so for people discouraged from buying a 970 just because of the vram thing when it's still a pretty awesome card, just think of it as i said in the post :D. (ignore the 4GB part though).

What caught my attention when the news broke was the fact that in order to access that 0.5GB chunk of memory, the other 3.5GB cannot be accessed during that cycle. I mean, we're talking nanoseconds in the double digits here, but it does limit how often that 0.5GB is accessed, before it disrupts the performance of the other 3.5GB chunk.

Hi. I'm going to point out something here:

NOT EVERYBODY GAMES ON A SINGLE MONITOR IN FULLSCREEN.

If you have two monitors plugged in and you're gaming in windowed mode or borderless windowed mode, windows itself is going to use up vRAM. Various programs can use up vRAM. I've been able to get windows' usage up to about 800MB without me doing anything game-wise. When I launch a game on top of that, you get 3.8GB of vRAM used if the game was using 3GB alone.

So no. The problem does not exist ONLY in the scope of "what does the game use". It exists in the scope of certain users' SETUPS themselves.

If you don't have the issue or problem, fine. I would have the issue and as such for me the card is not a card I could buy, because my regular usage habits would break it easily. When I play Evolve I use 3.8GB of vRAM. When I play Dying Light I use 3.6-3.9GB of vRAM. When I used to play Titanfall I used 3.7-4GB of vRAM. CoD: AW uses 3.9GB of vRAM when I run it. There's a truckload of things that I would and do play and will in the future play that would devour vRAM and my habits of dual monitor and multitasking (NOTE: NOT GAMING ON TWO SCREENS. ONLY GAMING ON ONE. SECOND SCREEN REMAINS PLUGGED IN) mean that the 970 is worthless to me.

So I'm not saying it's a weak card. I'm not saying it's a card nobody should buy. What I *AM* saying is that it's not a good card for everyone, and whether you have the problem or not, the memory issue *IS* A PROBLEM.

Okay? We good? You like it enjoy, you don't like it, don't use it. Don't you DARE bash anyone who doesn't want one because their vRAM needs/uses are higher than yours.

ANd for the absolute last time, texture resolution in a game is different from render resolution. I could run games at 4K that'd use 1.5GB of vRAM with AA and then games at 1080p that use 3.5GB of vRAM without AA. It depends more on the GAME than on the resolution. So PLEASE don't bring in "well a 970 sucks for 4K" or some similar crap trying to explain that games don't use that vRAM at 4K. Some games cross it at 1080p, some games won't cross it at 8k. Shh.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

Don't fool yourself. They are a company, they exist to make money - from us. The only thing they are going for is as minor an increase as possible between series.

I'm not fooling myself at all. You see, that is what I'm sure they were 'trying' to do. I honestly think it would have been a great marketing strategy if they had announced from the beginning that it has a slower .5gb vram. The truth is, they HAD to cut down .5gb in order to fit another gb of vram in the first place. Otherwise it would have simply been a 3gb card. Where nvidia went wrong is not by giving is crippled ram, but by lying to us and not telling us in the first place.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather have 4gb (3.5 + .5 slow) of VRAM than 3gb.

Still, they lied and I'm not happy about it.
