so for some time i have been looking at processors and judging them by how many ghz they can pull. on my friends small laptop he only has 2.2 Ghz when my processor has it set to 3.5 Ghz. so i would say my cpu is better but i was wrong! because he can perform much better in tasks that require high cpu usage. and games as well like arma that uses a lot of cpu power. So what should i be looking at when comparing the power between processors? please show examples as well to make me understand better! thanks!

You should be comparing the compute performance not the raw clock speeds when compairing CPU's

Unless you're comparing CPUs across the same family / architecture, you cannot directly compare two unrelated CPUs purely on their core count and clock speed. *cough*amd*cough* You would have to do a benchmark or some test.

He might have more cores or hyper threading (if it is an i7). What CPU do you each have?

An Example.....A Quadcore 3GHZ i5 from years ago gets beaten handily by a modern Quadcore 3GHZ i5.

They would share similar specs, and written on paper, you'd have a hard time choosing between the two without performance metrics to look at.

Never base a buying decision off specs alone.

Research and base it off performance.

IPC per core is the MOST important...

unfortunately yes.. amd 965... but i am getting an i7 4790k with a motherbord the second i save the money for it..

Well that explains it, unfortunately AMD cpus are bad is single threaded applications because of their low

core performance. Nice move on saving up for an Intel cpu though, but you don't have to go i7 if you're

mainly gaming. You could go with an i5 too.

Yeh, but what about his friend?

He said his friend had a laptop, and that sounds like something one of the older very-low-end i7s might do. The 3612QM or 4702MQ etc would have had very low base clocks like 2.2GHz

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

1s to all, is the core count number (for me) - "more = better"

2d, is the ghz - "more = better" (but the core count is more important always)

a standar this days is an 4 cores (or 6 cores) with 4ghz on AMD and a i5 on intel

APU = A10

i had i7 3612QM 2.1Ghz in my old laptop, amazing performance in editing, multitasking considering its 2.1Ghz

but in games it sucked, not because of the cpu, but i had shitty gpu

3612QM is very good processor

Lol, that CPU didn't sit near 2.1GHz most of the time. You probably had that running at 2.8GHz on 4 cores all the time. Can't discount turbo boost.

Hashwell to hashwell , yes.

Hashell to bulldozer , lol no.

Do you mean Haswell? Also, Bulldozer is x1xx. Current x3xx is Piledriver. :)

Yes , and it was an example.

I could have used Nehalem for all it mattered Q_Q.
