I just bought my first mechanical keyboard.

It is a Logitech G710+ with Cherry MX browns, the keys feel very scratchy.  Is the normal for MX brown switches or is something wrong? I removed the preinstalled o-rings under the key caps and that made the feel a little better. But I'm still not happy.

I went to Best Buy and tried some of the keyboards they have.  I like the way the Razor BlackWidow Chroma keys feel, smooth with a slight click.

Do the Cherry MX blues have about the same feel. Or should I get something like the red for a smooth key.

Browns have a tactile feedback. Blues have tactile feedback with a click. Reds do not have a tactile feedback or click. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by 'scratchy', but I'm guessing it's the tactile feedback of the Brown switch. Basically there's a bit of resistance the key gives right before the key press would be registered.

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

You gotta try out the keyboards and the keys, we can't give you a "YOU NEED THIS SWITCH" answer. We all like different things.

I myself, prefer Razer keys above all others i've tried. Before Razer greens I was in love with mx blues, but something about the Razer keys just makes them feel snappier, and faster.

Yea, I found browns to be "scratchy" also.  Thats a good way to put it.

I also made the mistake of buying before trying.  If you like the Razer Blackwidow Chroma keys with a click, then you want a Cherry MX Blue.

Ok guys hold on a minute.

Original poster: Please explain what you mean by scratchy.

Do you mean that the tactile bump doesn't feel like a bump but feels like a clump of loose sand?  Meaning it feels like it almost isn't there at all?  Or is it the part past the bump, when you slide the switch feely from UNDER the tactile bump, to the bottom out point (the sliding) that feels scratchy?

If it's the first, RMA the board.  The switch itself is defective.  One of my ducky shine 3's were like this; W had virtually no tactile bump, neither did R and the left shift had almost none, either   (I assume it was made during the time that Logitech had bought literally all of the MX browns for their G710+ keyboard run and they were basically hard or impossible to find forever, and I guess either ducky's QA wasn't so great or there was a MASSIVE shortage.  The second shine 3 was much better, as is my non fire shine 4.

The G710+ brown keys, however, all feel 'more' tactile than either the shine 3 or 4 MX browns, which I find bizarre.

But anyway: If it's the second, then you have to break the keyboard in by using it.  That's just the new key feel.  I haven't used my brown MX shine 4 very much (I quickly bought a fire edition ducky 69 and fell in love with that) so almost all of my shine 4 keys are more or less scratchy (the sliding, not the bump).

I have an old G710+.  I Just checked it just now, and I found that ESDF keys (my FPS movement keys; I don't use WASD) are nice and smooth, while the function keys (F4, etc) are scratchy.

Since the function keys are very rarely used, then that makes complete sense.  I used that keyboard a lot.

I know exactly what the OP is talking about.  It's not the physical bump in the switch but the travel overall before and after the bump.  I've also heard it described as "grainy" but basically it's not as smooth as what was expected.  I have a K95 RGB from corsair with browns and noticed this right off the bat.  From what I can tell it's normal to how they are supposed to feel and I really don't notice it anymore unless I try to.

Would the Razer keyboard be good?  I'm kind of afraid of buying another keyboard and having to send it back.   Logitech makes the same the keyboard I have with MX blues also.

I'm kind of leaning to just picking up the Razer since I know I like the feel the of their switches.

Lots of people will give you flack for wanting a Razer product, don't pay head to them.  If the Razer switch is what you like, get that.  The Chroma also has tons of features.  There are less expensive options though, a Razer Green switch is basically an MX Blue switch.  There is a "knockoff" brand of mechanical switches called Kailh, they are supposedly not as good, but I haven't noticed a difference, and most reviewers, including Linus will also say they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Kailh and Razer switches if blindfolded.

I recently bought a Tesoro Lobera Supreme with Brown switches.  Great keyboard, you can check out my review of it here. I just didn't like the brown switches.

The Tesoro Lobera Supreme with Blue Switches is on sale at NCIX for just $90!  There is also the Tesoro Durandal for $85.

The keys are scatchy feeling like something is grinding or binding up inside. I can feel the tactile bump if I a push it slowly but all of the keys are scratchy feeling. Some are worse than others.

What a coincidence!!!

I just got the same exact keyboard on Sunday.

At first, I thought the same thing, but after using them a bit, the scratchiness seems to subside a bit.

Not sure if this is me, or if I "broke them in", but regardless, I hope this helped.

Thanks!

For my personal trying out of the Razer switches vs Cherry, I think the main difference that I picked up on is travel distance; Razer switches don't have nearly as much travel distance compared to Cherry switches.  I mostly noticed the difference in the space bar where it felt like I barely had to press it down at all on the Razer Chroma.  Granted, this was just my experience trying it out at Fry's and not any extended length of time, but they do feel different...not bad different, it all comes down to personal preference.

Yea, I agree wholehearedly.  That little bit of reduced travel distance is very nice by my feel.  I actually prefer it to the Cherry Blue.  Another thing about Kailh Keyboards, a lot of them use Costar Stabilizers, not Cherry Stabilizers.  I am having to learn first hand how poor Cherry Stabilizers are, whereas Costar stabilizers are preferred and much better, less mushy, less uneven, all-around better.  Like you say though, personal preference.
