i7-2600k, worth it still for a great price?

Throw away the PSU, buy a new one, you'd wanna make sure you have a performing PSU, which is a LOT easier for your peace of mind if you bought a new PSU for overclocking the 2600K into beast mode instead of using an older one you've no idea how many hours of use it's had.

Overclocking to 4.5Ghz is WAY TOO EASY, and you only need the equivalent of a Hyper212 to get there.

Pushing for more,... get a better CPU cooler though!

Trust me... getting to 4.6-4.8Ghz is also do-able (bar the bad silicon lottery), but temps are getting towards concerning levels on the Hyper when up to 4.8Ghz or higher.

Hello all!

On craigslist, there is an ad for a PC with an i7-2600k, a decent Z68 motherboard, a Cooler Master 600 watt powersupply (80+ bronze), and 8GB of Corsair RAM at 1600Mhz. I know Sandy Bridge is pretty darn old, but all of this stuff is only $250... which I feel like is a steal. Good idea or no? I'll be doing mostly gaming (I'll buy a 290x, 970, or something like that), but I also do semi-professional video work as well. Lots and lots of video editing!

I'd do it provided it's a full computer and has a decent aftermarket cooler and has a good case/air flow and all the little details are correct. That's still a decent CPU if you don't have anything right now, but it'll only still be decent for another year or so, so it's really up to you.

Yeah I'd take it!

Do it now! it's a steal.

i7 2600k is still a great CPU, if you are just gaming then it is really good

I know right?? I was dumbfounded by how cheap he was selling it. Listed for $300 and I talked him down to $250 because I have to drive into Boston. I'll probablly do it and upgrade to a new CPU and motherboard at the end of the summer when I work more hours. This is more of a temporary thing and I feel like it's better than coughing up for an i5-4690k. Linus' video on buying used stuff really made me realize that it's a terrific idea.

Yeah a new PSU is only like $90ish so I'm not too worried about that.

Sandy Bridge i5, i7 are probably the best gaming CPUs ever made for their time, and they're still top notch now four years later. As long as everything is in working condition you're really getting a steal here.

That's what I've read so far as I've been doing some research. I'll obviouly check if everying works when I visit the guy :)

I'm jealous of people who bought the i5-2500k and i7-2600k back when they came out. How crazy to get a high end gaming CPU and then 4 years later it's still a high end gaming CPU? And without even having to buy $1000 extreme editions.

Right? My buddy from work got the 2500K for about $200 new when it was king and its still going strong. And the thing that really gets me, he hasnt even tried to overclock yet and he is using an aftermarket cooler. That bastard lol

The only reason I have this i5 is because I was chasing 5.2Ghz on my 2600K, and broke my CPU (which is super rare to actually kill it) :(

I however, still using speedstep,...was at 4.8Ghz for years as a daily driver.

Not to update an oldish thread, but I got the i7-2600k and it's running perfectly! Paired it with a 290x that I snagged for $230 so I'm a happy guy.

excellent deal if I say so myself.  I have 2500k and it's still a beast of a cpu.  My next cpu upgrade will be skylake that is if it's truly what Intel makes it out to be.

Working out great so far! Dying Light seems to be stuttering a lot, but I think that's the 290x.
