How do they work?

IK they use the needle to make the thing vibrate, like a string instroment,

But, like, how do you get it to sound like certain things, and voices?

It seems so complexe to get it exact.

I find it cool how i can hear it with no speakers

They work exactly like sound waves.

Sound waves are also sinusoidal in nature.

So when the neddle hits the groove it produces a sound.

Primitive people way back did this with clay.

Yeah, IK that, but how do they get it so exact?

Like, i cant make my cello sound like a singer, how can it make a record sound like asinger?

The same way your speakers, with one vibrating piece of something, created complex sound.

Bought a powermac G5, expect a mod log sometime in 2015

Each sound has a different sound wave.

Pure sound has a sinusoidal sound wave. Non pure sound, like our voices or the sound of an instrument, have non sinusoidal sound waves.

Just seems so complex.

Its interesting how its one of the only forms of audio storage that can only store audio.

You can put data on sd card, CD, and even a tape.

But not on a record.

Ok, this kinda makes sense.

It seems so difficult to get each wave exact on a record.

Well that's because it's storing a physical representation of the sound, not data.

A hard drive stores data. Data can be anything

It depends on the depth of the grooves. some of them are deeper, meaning a lower note, and some are shallower,  creating a higher note.

ah.

Its just so facinating, i just bought a record player yesterday for 15$ at goodwill.

Its a pretty nice one, fully auto, i just press start, record spins, and the arm moves by itself onto the record.

I'm considering getting a player along with some records since my dad used to listen to records all the time before tape was out.

Actually you can convert images into audio and back again. Also there's a thing DJ's have called timecode vinyl that let's then use their turntables with their mp3 or WAV collection. The records basically act as control for software like Traktor or Scratch Live, the sound is all digital though. The records do have sound but it's a high pitched whine. I'm not sure what voodoo magic they're doing but it's really cool. It also let's them take the needle off the record and drop it in at a later point and the software follows suit.
