WD Green HWMonitor

Go to solution Solved by GoldSrc,

Holy Moly :|

what is causing the read error rate to be so high ?

mines only at 13?

so the write error rate is okay with the value i have?

and my pending / re-allocated sector is still at 0

so its still good right?

I have no idea why it's so high xD.

And yeah, your drive should be ok.

Hi

When i don't use my WD Green

maybe for 15-20 mins

and i open hwmonitor

hwmonitor only read my SSD, and the WD Green is disappeared

and if i open a file from my WD Green, like a movie or something

and close + open HWMonitor again, then i can see my WD Green on the HWMonitor

is this normal?

is HWmonitor not reading a HDD that has power saving (Green) ?

The drive might be turning off since you're not using it. You can change that in the Windows power options though.

Yepp

but i don't think WD Green can be change through windows power option

Yes, because there aren't any calls for it?

Ah i See

Thanks !

Windows will spin down any rotating drives you have to prolong their life, save power, and save energy. Close out of HWMonitor, write a file to your hard drive, then wait a second, then open HWMonitor and your drive should be there.

Yes my drive is shown now

;)

Windows will actually spin the drive all the way down if it's idle. But you can change that in the Control Panel settings.

Your WD green could have the wdidle3 enabled, that damn thing can reduce the life span of your hard drive.

Keep an eye on the amount of load/unload cycles, use Aida64 or something that can read the SMART data,

it shouldn't increase too fast.

The stars died for you to be here today.

Yep i think all WD Green has intellipark thing that shuts off every 8 seconds even with power options?

i really don't know how to use wdidle3 :|

is it really terrible to let it be ? i'm using it for gaming and watching movies in this hdd

can crystaldiskinfo read the smart data? and where can i see the load/unload cycles?

Here, this is what you don't want to see

d46d62d9be6404c019aa953f5f2a63a7.png

See the huge difference between the start/stop counts of 6,735 and the load/unload cycles of 282,741?

Power on and power off counts are good and consistent, but load/unload is a mess.

To get those raw values in Crystal Disk Info, you have to go to Function > Advanced feature > Raw values and select 10 DEC.

There's a youtube video that shows you how to increase the time of wdidle3 from 8 seconds to something higher o you can disable it, let me see if I can find it.

I disabled the damn thing on mine, but you have to make sure that you can disable it in yours, if not, just set the damn thing to something higher than 8 seconds.

Oh

So what i want to watch out for is the start / stop count and the load / unload cycles ?

if its goes to high i'm in trouble?

yep i already see the wdidle3 from u seconds to 300 seconds using wdidle3 /s300 or wdidle3 /d to disable it

but its too much of a hassle to do :|

and i only use it as 1 drive though

no raid

i asked a lot of people too, they said its "okay" if not used in raid or server use

so if i dont use it in raid or server

will the lifespan of this hdd still shorten drastically?

It should be ok, but to be sure, make a log and see how much the load/unload increases every day.

Once a drive is close to 300,000, you will have to worry and make a back up.

If you see that you don't need to mess around with the wdidle3 don't do it, is not that difficult to do it though,

I did it in a few seconds, just make sure you only have the drive you want to change connected nothing else.

And this is my WD Green

attachicon.gif1.png

As you can see, there's something wrong with that Seagate, its start/stop count is 1741 while its load/unload is 120268, way too much.

Your WD green is also a little high, its start/stop is 157 while its load/unload is 4198 not good.

Just keep an eye on them and don't let them get close to 300,000, because that's when they can start to fail.

is that the problem ?

And how about the wd green?

I think i will try the wdidle3

But i dont know which one to download

And how to make the boot drive

I already try using hp boot disk but it takes so long to make

Is there any power option should i change in my laptop and my PC?

As of now, I don't know if there's a fix for Seagate, I too have a Seagate, a 3TB one that has a load/unload of 28,510 and a start/stop of 221.

The only "fix" which I doubt you will use, is try to find a software that can write and delete stuff from the drive to stop it from going idle.

What I do with my drive is leave an uncompressed AVI file playing, that way I can make sure the drive is always doing something when I don't want it to go idle.

If you're going to use the wdidle3 make sure that you can use it with your model of hard drive, and remove every other drive while you do that.

This is the video where I found how to do it.

As I'm typing this, my Seagate is on 28,510 and my WD green is on 282,741, I expect that number to increase in my Seagate but not in my WD.

Well, that's a problem.

Try to get an uncompressed AVI video file and keep it playing from your Seagate and check if the number increases.

You can try this to make a bootable drive

I would try it and test it but I can't find any spare sub stick or CD-R.

If you have Fraps, you can record a short gameplay video, 10-15 seconds should be enough,

the files that Fraps gives you are uncompressed and are king of huge, around 500MB for 30 seconds of video.

MKV and MP4 are not uncompressed files.

i check the seagate has warranted 600.000 cycle

if i surpassed that, will it fail ?

Nope, it wont fail right away, but you don't want to take any chances.

The lower that number is, the better for the health of the drive.

and then use media player classic to play it on loop ?

Yeah, pretty much, that way the drive will keep reading something and not go idle.

Oh i see

and i want to ask

i think my load unload cycle is ~1000 per day

and my seagate warranted load unload is 600.000

and right now my load unload is 121.000

so to reach 600.000

i still have 500 days give or take right ? (is this normal ?)

isn't it already time to change the HDD anyway ?

the power on hours is on ~6400 right now

the HDD is on my Laptop ASUS n56VZ, if it failed, can i change it to another one ?

and what would you recommend ? that has no green stuff, so that the load / unload cycle is not very high on daily use

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

and as for the WD Green

is formatting usb drive to MS DOS bootable drive takes a long time ?

yesterday i tried to format it using HP tool

after 8 minutes, the progress is still at 5-6% maybe

is that normal?

and after i finish formatting the drive to MS DOS bootable drive

how do i add wdiddle3.exe to my bootable drive?

sorry for a lot of questions
