So, I had left my PC idle for a bit, I came back, and I noticed that performance was crap. I checked task manager to find 4000+ rundll32 processes dedicated to norton.

Rebooting didn't help.

How about Avast!

Also the rundll32 coming from SysWow64 is also very fishy, if I'm correct the SysWow64 rundll is a trojan horse

How about Avast!

I'd say MSE + Malwarebytes if he's careful, or Bitdefender Free. Avast seems more like a trial that you have to renew. It also tries to sell you their paid product. Bitdefender Free does neither if these things. It's also very lightweight and won't bug you all the time.

Avira is also good, avast is becoming a bit aggresive with their marketing pop-ups. A lot of thinks like 'your computer is slow, check here which programs can be removed' or crap like that which leads you to a shop page from avast. I suspect it's getting a little more resource heavy too.

Get rid of the Norton crap and go with Avast.

Nope that's where the x86 version should be, the one is system32 is the x64

SysWoW64 is the System Windows on System x64 folder, its all the 32bit versions of the system applications and settings.

norton= shit.

My dad put it on my brothers computer to get rid of a virus similar to that, didnt do jack shit but made it worse. He got me to fix it instead. Avast = better.

Any Antivirus is better than Norton. I noticed this years ago. I got a free Norton Trial with something or other, I don't remember what. But I do remember my hdd light flashing non-stop after that. It never stopped. This went on for days and performance was slowed to awful. Uninstalled it. Everything was fine again.

Its like its scanning everything you do, non-stop.

Avast Free + Malwarebytes Free

Be careful you don't get any bloatware installing avast though.

Avast installs PUPs. I only use MalwareBytes.

+1, Windows Defender + Malwarebytes is my go-to.
