Looks like a Pangolin to me

they're actually being sold illegally here as pets

my uncle had one but when he found out it was illegal he gave it to the authorities.

They are kind of cute, I can understand why people would want them as pets.  Though I hear they die easily when not in the wild.  From further reading it seems like their meat is a delicacy in China, and so they are mass importing them for the slaughter.

I am impelled not to squeak like a grateful and frightened mouse, but to roar...
