Is this card known as a 1080p card or a 1440p card???

It will perform great up to 4K. It's more a 1440P card, but will perform fantastic at 1080P

you'll even get playable frame rates at 4k as its on par with my gtx 770 and that's a trooper at 4k

way overkill for 1080p but didn't stop me or others, maxing a game out and getting 90fps like it doesnt even matter is nice.
but its a 1440p card like the 970/980/titan/titanblack/780/780ti....
actually the 280x is a 1440p card really so long as you're not running 4xMSAA (which is dumb at 1440p) and the 270 is a 1080p card, the 270 is HALF or the 290...
you can do 4k just not maxed out, high settings for the most part, but hey, who bench's that, reviewers prefer 32fps on ultra opposed to 50fps on high cus there's so much difference and they need that antialiasing.

The R9 290 is made for higher resolutions, It was pretty much the R9 290 that got people into 4k gaming But it fits into Everything.

I used mine for 1080p before downsampling was common.

Thinking that even overkill for 1080p, next years/the year afters titles would be more demanding and THEN... it would be the sweetspot.

 

But still quite great for 1440p also, ample FPS for most people.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
