I've been paired up with a person in my class for small project, this person is quite a bit..he has issues in terms of work and understanding(sort of) anyways our project involves setting up a network using packet tracer from Cisco. Also we have to spec out a server. So I was told to get the specs for the server while he starts on the Cisco packet tracer. I gave him a sheet of paper telling  him what routers we need and switches. I left him for 3 HOURS, I come back and he says I don't know that to do.. We've been studying Cisco for the past 4 weeks, the lecturers has given us books, videos. He still doesn't understand a thing.

He has problems with other assignments, he literally has no clue what are doing in the lectures.

The project is due in on Thursday.

What shall I do?

You can be cold and go to the professor and ask for a new partner saying the person you are paired with has no clue of what he is doing or you could be whipped and just end up doing all the work just to make sure your project is done on time.  Still in doing this I don't think you'd be doing the guy any favors so I say go to the professor.   It sounds like you are in university or college so it is the mature thing to do.

Too many ****ing games!  Back log 4 life! :S

Fire your partner. Talk with the professor and make your dissatisfaction known. If you carry your teammate, he won't learn anything. scratch that--he'll learn to bee a leech.

The Piece of paper that the information was on the local network drive, I just Printed and I gave it to him. I told him, you do your bit and I do my own bit. I did not help at all.

We do group work a lot at my school. In fact, most our work is group work... If one member is not doing his/her fair share, we bring it up first with the teammate, then if it doesn't change, we bring it up with the professor. Your group grade should not be sabotaged by a leech. It sucks and it's awkward, but the people that advance and excel are the ones who work well with others and stand up for themselves. You sound like you work very well with others. Now all you need to do is express to your teammate that you feel overloaded and that you are doing a disproportionate amount of work. Ask to even the workload politely, and hopefully he picks up the pace. Who knows, maybe you'll be the first to give him that wake up call.

It's hard to call someone out like this, especially in classes. Believe me though, it's so much more difficult in the workplace to tell someone they don't carry their fair share... Get it done early so he learns to not be a leech :) it helps you and everyone who works with him after you do.

I've spoken to him, I've told that you need to get the work done, if not I'll replace you. He tells me its to hard to understand. I've sent an e-mail to lecturer telling about this. Hopefully He'll replace him.

I don't understand what's so hard about it? He has books and tells me he doe not understand it..I mean really? I don't how he is going to university...( I doubt it).

@Abdul201588 that's simple I always ask the prof. If I can submit the project/paper/assignment with missing names, if they won't help or had no effort whatsoever to learn/understand the work.

All of them says yes as long as they really didn't help.

But before that try to get them to participate and boost their enthusiasm. Maybe they just need a bit of a push.

EDIT: Last year in College (UK)

Seems like your going to have to talk to your teacher about it.

There's no way in hell I'd let someone get home free with no effort from the other person.

@RedSphyxis I've tried. I've spoken to him on several occasions I've told him how this will help you in the future. He said he's trying. I've contacted my lecturer and he said he'll talk to my team-mate.

The way we do our project, is one person does his part the other does his and then we finalise it and then write up a report on what happened during the project.

I've also taken this problem to the head of IT.
