i5 4670k Frequency Fluctuations?

Go to solution Solved by r4id3rz,

Disabled EIST, no more problems.

Thank you.

EDIT: Somehow closing MSI Afterburner/Rivas Tuner did the same effect, before i turned off EIST.

My CPU has been wildly fluctuating its frequency under load, for some applications.

It fluctuates down to 0.8 GHz, with a lowest CPU VCORE of 0.152V...

My system isnt throttling thermally, its never over ~40C under load, so what might be the problem?

I have also disabled MSI OC Genie, updated BIOS to latest, prayed to Cats, no effect.

System Parts:

CPU: i5 4670k

Mobo: MSI Z87-GD65

PSU: Corsair RM1000W

If you need anymore information, just ask.

Intel SpeedStep. It underclocks the CPU when it's not under heavy load.

The CPU wont go full speed if it doesnt need too. so thats normal i think. (correct me if im wrong)  ;)

yep. Although one can force it to operate at full speed.

I have it on my i5 4690k. If it doesnt need the power then it will automatically underclock itself, but when I open a game it goes to 4GHz.

I have seen mine as low as 1.2GHz when doing nothing but chrome.

Explain to me how to force it to run at max frequency please.

My problem is that its lowering its frequency under load, and near max frequency when not.
The temps are never over ~40C so its not thermal throttling...

I have also turned off MSI afterburner/rivas tuner, and its running alot better.
So i think its MSI afterburner that is conflicting with that particular program...

Open a crapload of chrome tabs. Problem solved.

Did you update any recent bios? If you're overclocking. Disable EIST, C-states. Any vcore offset?

Disable EIST, C-states. It will throttle down by 10-15% with it on C1 default.

do you benchmark all of the time? i have my 4790K @ 4.4 on all cores and with it on or off theres no difference in benchmarks at least thats for me do you get a difference in benchmarks

Its not overclocked, and I've had the same BIOS for about a month now.

There is no reason the CPU would drop down to 0.8GHz for anything, especially if its under load.

Lemme try to find a variable voltage setting in my BIOS...

EDIT: its fluctuating between ~3.7GHz and 0.8GHz/1GHz/2GHz

That's how speedstep works. It drops down to 0.8GHz when there's a minimal amount of workload on the CPU

50/50 bench and gaming. Still learning. I get a difference especially with memory overclocked.

The problem is, its near stable at ~3.4-3.6GHz when not under load, then fluctuates between ~3.6 to 0.8 GHz under load.

I have found EIST and disabled it, and turned voltage settings to "adaptive".

Ill check again if thats the problem.
