GTX-780 or 7970

IFeaRZz

Right I've got a budget of roughly £1000 but I'm stuck on the graphics card is it worth paying

GTX-780 or going with a AMD Radeon 7970 or GTX-680

AMD Radeon 7970

They're all around the same price ranges I want a very high quality graphics card I will be overclocking it. And I will be using video editing software.

I'm also thinking about going with a Sandy Bridge i7 or Haswell the Sandy is cheaper.

Technology is a curse... why? Because it's so addictive.

For video editing, I would go with a GTX 780 (Single, strong GPU).

For gaming, I would go with Crossfire 7970's (costs about as much as a GTX 780).

I wouldn't bother with a GTX 680. Either get the newest (the 780) or get the best price-performance (7970). The 680 is neither of those.

Performance wise the 780 definitely takes the cake, by a descent margin. If you can afford the extra 150$, go for it.

I vote for the 7970, the GTX 780 seems to be too much for your price point without skimping on other components, The 680 is routinely beat by the 7970 and its cheaper so its pointless to go for the 680.

EDIT- NVM, go with the 780, I didnt see the British pound marker, I was thinking $1000 USD

Performance wise the 780 beats both of those by quite a bit, since it's only 50$ more I would definitely recommend it.

The 780 is about £150 more which is about $200's because of our taxes and V.A.T which sucks or I'd have defiantly gone with a 780..

Yeah I edited my post, I just used the $ sign because that's the only thing I have on my keyboard :D Still I would recommend the 780 if you can afford it, if not probably the 7970 would be my second choice. What resolution monitor will you be gaming on?

I will be probably using a 1920x1080 monitor and later down the line switching it up for dual monitors I need to sort out a decent monitor which would be good for graphics and so on, but my main focus is my computer.

I'm just a little skeptical about the parts at the moment because I want it to work for a few years.

I have 780 sli and I absolutely love it. I previously had a titan, sold it for the SLI 780's.

Even just  1 780 is great, I didn't order the second right away

I would recommend a 7970, it's as fast as a 680 & faster once both are overclocked.
It also has a significant edge over the 680/770 in higher resolutions & multi monitor setups.
There are 3 models which I feel comfortable recommending, the HIS 7970 IceQ X2, the Sapphire Dual-X & the MSI Twinfrozr III.
The Gigabyte & XFX models are voltage locked so avoid those.

The 7970 also has more VRAM than the 680/770 & a significantly wider memory interface (7970 384bit, 680/770 254bit) this profoundly affects performance with Anti Aliasing (the graphics setting which removes jagged edges) and gives the card an edge on higher resolutions (the higher you go the larger the performance gap).

You can also get GTX 780 performance out of an overclocked 7970.

Another reason why I'd recommend the 7970 is that you get 4 games for free bundled with the card, Crysis 3, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider & Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon.

This sums up what I think of the 770 as compared to the 7970:

I really don't think so, from what I've seen from all the reviews, the 7970 remains the better option unless you're a hardcore Nvidia fan.
The 7970 and the 770 perform within margin of error most of the time, except in games where the 7970 has a sizable advantage due to its double percision 64bit floating point performance like Hitman Absolution & Sleeping Dogs.
The 7970 also comes as standard with 3GB of VRAM so you don't find yourself in a situation like you do with the 770 where you have to think about whether you need to pony up for the larger 4GB buffer or stick to the standard 2GB.

Another bonus is having the assurance that most if not all next-gen titles will be automatically optimized for your card because of the GCN based Radeon heart in the XBOX One & the PS4.
AMD also tries to swing you their way by their extremely attractive game bundle of Crysis 3, Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite & Far Cry : Blood Dragon.

You also feel safe knowing that if you decide to upgrade your monitor & migrate to higher resolutions that performance will scale better than the 770 & you will have enough memory.

There are still some advantages to the 770 however like GPU based PhysX and currently frame pacing in SLI, this advantage however will soon become irreverent when AMD release their Heart Beat pacing technology.
CUDA used to be an advantage in premiere pro software but Adobe & AMD went ahead and released OpenCL support on the new Premiere Pro CC software.

All in all though, I still maintain the 7970 is the better overall package.

As of the time of posting, the 780 takes the crown from the 7970, but the 7970 still comes with the Never Settle bundle, so free games is always a plus!
