Is Raid 0 safe?

Go to solution Solved by cesrai,

I dont mind data loss, But when It fails is it still useable?

When a drive fail it's gone, you must buy a new drive, if your asking about the other drive yes it's still usable.

I am looking to set up a raid 0 on my Pc but I hear a lot of people talk about drives failing. Does Raid 0 lower the Lifespan of my Harddrives? If so then by how much? Thanks for the help!

It has more fail points, if one drive fail data is gone.

It's not safe for your data as failure rate is doubled.

It's not that it reduces lifespan(AFAIK) it's just that there is another point of failure. so 2x more likely. Someone correct me if I'm horribly wrong.

I dont care about the data loss, But  can I Re use the Raid drives or are they broken forever?

I've never done it before. Why not just get an SSD and a HDD for mass storage.(assuming that you're raid 0'ing HDD for performance)

Yes, I recommend Raid 0 with SSDs only, the Intel 730 series is very reliable SSD, the Kingston HyperX 3K is a reliable SSD.

its much easier and safer to buy a separate HDD+SSD

put OS and programs on the SSD and keep files on the HDD, you will get a lot more speed than raid 0, and it will be more reliable

if youre not worried about losing the stuff on it then go ahead, you will get close to double the speed from raid 0

if one drive fails you lose everything, but the other drive will still work, so you only need to replace the one that broke

How fast do they break?

well HDDs usually last at least 3-5 years, usually more

having them in raid 0 wouldnt increase the chances of an HDD failing, but if either one fails you will lose the stuff

as long as you monitor your HDD health with a program like CrystalDiskInfo you should be able to catch your HDD before it fails and you lose the stuff

yes, correct

its just that now there are two drives that could possibly fail instead of one
