I'm admittedly a noob but there's something I just don't understand...

So, we've got the MSI R9 290X GAMING 8G Radeon R9 290X:

the XFX R9-290X-8DFD Radeon R9 290X 8GB:

and the SAPPHIRE 100361-8GVXSR Radeon R9 290X 8GB:

These are all Radeon R9 R90X 8GB cards. So, what's the difference? Honestly, in what way are these different from the 'original'

???

This makes no sense to me and just makes buying a graphics card more difficult and complicated. Can someone please clarify?

Welcome to the forums! There are various companies that make the GPU's, based on AMD's chips. This is because not everyone likes the look of one GPU. Same goes for every chip produced by AMD or nVidia - there a many cooler designs for the single GPU chip, so that everyone can have what they want.

Basically each version is a tweaked card, some have better coolers, some have better power designed, better connectivity, or faster clock speeds

the difference between them is generally not THAT great, a few degrees here and there, a 1-5 fps or something like that, so I wouldn't worry TOO much
