Older CPUs That Still Perform?

I still have an i7 930 that I pulled out of a Dell XPS 9100 I bought 5 years ago.  It still performs quite well for its age on the X58 platform.  I built a new system with it using an MSI X58A-GD45 in which I got brand new off of Amazon for less than $100 and a pair of GTX 550 Ti GPUs.

You can go with a 1366 chipset and a 980X. I used to have that processor and it is a total beast, especially if you do some overclocking.

Why no AMD? Phenom II is great!

 

Yeah, I've changed my mind - depends what I can find for the price. The Phenom II x4's were pretty strong in their day. :)

First or Second Gen i7 are about equal to modern i5 these days.

Speaking from experience (see sig) the core 2 extremes are still very viable gaming chips.

Especially the later 1333mhz fsb chips like the qx9650. You can also get the Xeons from that time and do a quick socket mod to make them work on LGA 775 (Xeons were 771).

These can be found nice and cheap on eBay and they over clock like a fiend with the right board.

P45 or nforce 780/790s are the best chipsets to use for stability. X38 is also good, but harder to find.

My FrankenPC that has a QX9650 @ 3.8 and a GTX 970 performs very well even in modern titles like AC Unity and Far Cry 4.

Struck gold today and found a really nice deal on a CPU and mobo with 4GB 1333 DDR3 ram included, all for less than what most people were asking for Core 2 Quads and 1st gen Core I5's alone. The CPU in this should match an Ivy Bridge i3 and the motherboard was apparently really high-end about 3 years ago. Not to mention, it's in immaculate condition. ;)

 

Will be starting a build log, probably next week, where I'll list the full specs.
