Why does Gmod take so long long to join a server?

Me and my friend are playing Gmod. We both try a new game mode that we haven't played before. I join it several minutes before him. Somehow he beats me joining the server. Like ill be joining for 10-15 longer than him. I have a much much much better PC and way better internet. I have no addons installed. Why does it take me so long?

Did he join the server some time earlier?

When joining a GMod server it has to download all the server files.

because most gmod servers have a lot of mods/extra files and your computer needs to download every single one, but after that connecting to that server should not take too long

Broke 14 Year old + No job + Love for Technology = Bad combo :(

But why does he join faster?

Server Manager for TTT server here. A lot of common files might be shared if he has been on other servers, such as sound files and maps. Which may be up to 200MB in size. So if he already has had those from other servers, he's all set. Though gmod still doesn't make sense to me how it manages users content most of the time, but I'll share whatever I know.

He might have a better download speed then you or a faster hard drive.
