How much VRAM do I need?

Go to solution Solved by Najuno,

For 1440p gaming 4GB VRAM are apropriate. 3 are possible. And 2GB VRAM and simply outdated and not sufficient even for 1080p ULTRA in newer titles. Go with a R9 290 it´s a fine card for the price.

Hello :)

I'm planning to build a pc for my birthday which was yesterday. My dad, since I still live home, is helping me along the way. I proposed a build, and we tweaked it together, but we are both stuck on the Video Card. My dad doesn't understand why I need a lot of VRAM, and he is looking for cheaper options. He said I can get more if I convince him why I need so much.

I originally looked at the R9 290, which has 4 GB of VRAM. I currently have an Apple Cinema Display which is a 27" 1440p monitor. I plan to get more monitors to run with it. So, how much VRAM should I have, and if so which graphics card would suit my needs?

I casually game, playing games like League of Legends and FIFA. But, I still want the best performance for my money.

Thanks!

For 1440p, you want 3-4 gb. The R9 290 should be great for that monitor. :)

More monitors? If surround gaming with triple 1440p, I would say 8gigs like Linus got (Mind you 8 gigs on a single card) And since the only 8 gig single card is the 290x 8G, that might be your ionly option.

Or if only single 1440p and other monitors for work, a 290x should be perfect as it has 4 gigs

Lets all ripperoni in pepperoni

4 gb is useful when you start to up the resolution or add textures. If you are gaming at 1440p and want to add more monitors you will need 4 gb as each pixel will take up more vram (basic terminology). The vapor x or tri x r9 290 will suit you well. Those are the two best r9 290's.
