I am currently an accounting major but plan on switching to computer science/programming. What kind of specs would be good for a pc to program on? I'm thinking about turning my old pc into one to teach myself programming. It has an i3, h61 mobo, 320GB WD blue, and a gtx 660 (i know gpu doesn't matter.). I need to buy new ram, psu, and cooler since I just upgraded my rig to a new mobo, but kept my ram and what not. Would a locked i7, with 16gb of ram be enough? Can't OC on the board so no reason to get a K series CPU.

Good idea, get a Xeon for that board as it it usually cheaper than an i7 and is basically the same

What languages or programs will you be using?

Basic HTML is very different from stuff like Unreal Engine, if you know what I'm sayin' ...

SSD+RAM are really the most important things in a programming build. 16GB is definitely enough. Also, get between 4 and 8 cores. Because you'll probably be multitasking

HTML isn't even a programming language, it's a markup language

This was a jokey thing, being a smartass, I'm not actually trying to be mean incase I sound like it

I haven't picked just yet. I am still in the early stages. Just trying to get a grasp on what to do. I would love to dabble in unreal but thinking Ruby, C++, Java, etc etc. Maybe some android and iOS apps. But learning how to work in UE4 is def something i'd like to do. :)

I myself am a 2nd Year Computer Science and the languages i use are Java, C# and other languages like php and html. i find that my system is good enough for it. as i use netbeans IDE but the best thing to have when programming is multiple screens.

Y R U SO MEAN U SUCH NOT NICE /jk

I know it isn't, but with stuff like PHP and JS thrown in it comes pretty darn close to it.. (well.. yeah..)

But still, people sometimes still address html as a programming language.

A locked i7 and 16GB RAM would be fine.
