big difference between 4440 4690k?

so is there a huge performance curb between the i5 4440 and the i5 4690k? also if I were to get the 4690k do I get the 4690 or 4670 if I wanted to save a couple bucks

Wins == Slight increase in performance you'll probably wont even notice, though it is unlocked so thats nice.

4690K is an improved 4670K. It has updated thermal paste inside and has something changed with resistors or voltage regulaters. Eigher way the 4690K is a wee bit cooler and dearer.

 

Edit: If buying a 4670K you can use Z87 and Z97 ( as well as others you shouldn't consider ) but with a 4690K you will need a Z97 board or a Z87 board with a bios update.

If not overclocking then he can save money by not having to buy a Zx7 board nor would he need to spend extra for the unlocked part which means he would be better off with a 4460

Once you overclock 4690K, then there is quite a difference, also future proof.

overclocking the i5-4690K can give it around 30% perf increase if you do it properly.

The 4690K wins purely for OC'ing but depending on what your doing, the Xeon 1230 (v3) is pretty damn good, as it has a higher base clock than the 4440 and has hyperthreading which destroys the other two in productivity.

Though the Xeon E3-1231v3 is a little better than the Xeon E3-1230v3, with 100MHz higher clockrate and usually better temperatures for about $5 more.
