Ok so as soon as my PC gets to my house i plan on putting it together, doing some updating and driver installing, than some gaming. Than after that i was really planning on possibly doing some game engine stuff. Now idk if this is the place to post this specifically in the software design area but i was really hoping that you guys could help me out and possibly send me a link or email me a download link or something of some game engines as most of them you have to pay for and i don't really want to pay monthly for a game engine. Now i was hoping that you guys would be able to possibly send me some sort of link or download of 2 game engines that i'm dying to get my hands on; the frostbite 3 engine (battlefield 4), and the raindrop engine from the new tom Clancy's The Division game. Now if you can do that for me you would really be awesome, anyways thank you for your help

Are those even publicly available? :P

You can get your hands on Unreal Engine though..

Haha well you can pay mothly for some engines, i believe you can pay like $30 a month for the frostbite engine but i have no clue if the raindrop engine is available anywhere, thats why i left it up to the profesionals of the LTT forums

Well you can learn programming, hire some guys, make your own engine without paying 30$ a month, and learning to program benefits financially and academically

*Begins crushing hopes and dreams* You will probably need to have millions of dollars to purchase a license to use one of those engines. Cryengine 3, Unreal Engine 4, and Unity are great engines but do cost money (though Im pretty sure all of them have cut down versions for free non commercial use). If you have some C++ experience OGRE handles a lot of the engine details even though it just a rendering engine. Torque 3D has an opensource version, Irrlicht is C++ and open source.

But honestly, if you're just starting out, go with Unity.

One issue with writing your own is that it will always lack the maturity of a commercial engine. Unless for learning or you need a very tailored solution writing your own engine tends to be both painful and not a very efficient use of time.

But you feel like you had a baby and you want it to grow. Given enough manpower and time, it can evolve like Frostbite, then to Frostbite 2, etc. Make your own games, get profit, release codes, HAH nothing i didnt learn from Game Dev Tycoon

Frostbite is not a public engine so forget it.

If you tell us what language do you prefer we can give you better suggestions, though if you don't have any language preference, you can look at Unity even in the free version allows you to publish your game commercially (only up to a certain point, although you will probably not reach it, since it's $100000 of annual earning).

UE4 could be an alternative but it's not free.

Before you start you need to know a few things:

  • You need to know how to code, possibly in the language used by the engine.
  • Programming alone it's not enough to make complete games, you need to know how to use 3D modelling tools like Blender for 3D games, or how to draw for 2D games.
  • Don't set too high your expectations, your initials projects are probably going to be awful, don't worry you will get better later on.

Make your own game engine.

I did that :D

Ended up pretty good.

You'll understand a lot more about how things work.

But honestly, if you're just starting out, go with Unity.

I'm writing my own too.

It's really fun and you will learn a lot, but if you just want to make games it's a bad idea for a few reasons, the two main reasons are:

The first reason and the most important is that you will not get anywhere near the quality or functionality and most likely performance of already available engines.

The second is time, you will waste lots and lots of time with the engine before you can actually start making the game.

Unless you are a PC/Coding Wizard go with Unity and C# http://unity3d.com/unity/download.

If you were a wizard you wouldnt need to ask and probably already knew what to do.

Basically all games engines will require at least 1 coding language if you dont know any take C# and unity, else go with an engine that uses the coding language you already know.
