How well is the PB278Q for gaming?

Mr_Pixle

Should I get this monitor or a different one? Linus said some nice things about it.

this is a good monitor

i had a 120hz moniter the had an imput lag of 7ms. by that trend, the higher the refreshrate the lower the lag, since CRTs have the refresh rate so high the vurtuly have no input lag
and look at any monitor at 60hz, chances are it wont be lower than 16.5ms

Not true cause the Viewsonic VP2770 pls panel 1440p monitor is 8ms at 60hz..
And the Dell 2713hm is 22ms at 60hz..

But yes 120hz cuts the input lag in half..

I need to get educated. What is a response time and what is input lag? Also how do you calibrate a monitor? Is it free?

To calibrate I believe you have to buy a screen calibrator, I think you stick it to the screen and it looks at the colors and figures out what they should actually look like or some crap.

Input lag I believe is the amount of time it takes for your movements to be sent to the monitor and the monitor displays it, whilst response time is how long it takes a pixel to change colors

It is excellent for gaming, I have tried it on a lot of games and not noticed any lag.

Definately a good upgrade if you have the hardware to match it.

Whats the difference if I got a BenQ XL2420T? Would I notice anything like response time and input lag? Should I get a TN panel if I want to game a lot or should I get a high res monitor?

Well the BenQ XL2420T is only 1080p so the picture quality is going to be a lot better on the Asus.  The BenQ has slightly less input lag than the Asus, the XL2420T has a maximum of 14ms input lag compared to the 17ms of the PB278Q.

The response time looks better on the Asus than the BenQ:

But it's probably not too noticeable.

If you're really serious about gaming then go for a high refresh rate monitor at 120 or 144Hz but for overall picture quality that is still great to game on, go for the 1440p monitor.

Don't worry about the input lag, 17ms is negligible.  At 60fps, one frame lasts 16ms, so the input lag is essentially 1 frame, which is virtually nothing.

It's been said but I'm not sure it was very clear.

At 60fps 1 frame is 16ms?  100ms in a second and 60 frames per second so 100/60 = 1.67ms per frame.  So in the 17ms of input lag 10.2 frames have past.

I'm wrong, yes 17ms is pretty much nothing.

1000ms in a second...  Hence millisecond.  ;)

Wow, amateur mistake from me there, sorry.  I think I'll just go curl up in a corner now and rock myself to sleep.

I dont really need a high refresh rate because I probably wont notice anything. I currently play a lot of Xbox 360 and I have nothing bad to say about 60Hz. Linus had a video with slicks friend and he couldn't notice the difference from 60HZ and 120HZ. Also the hardware I am getting will barley get past 60FPS on BF3 so I better hope BF4 will be more optimized and seems pointless if I'm not getting more than 60FPS. I do like fast past shooters but a 5MS response time seems alright for the benefits like better color and higher resolution and a bigger monitor. What would you choose yourself?

Well I got a PB278Q less than a week ago so that's what I went for :P I'm really glad I got it over other monitors, the high resolution and colour reproduction are amazing.

I always mess with the settings on everything but it looks great straight out of the box.  You might want to tweak the settings to what you think is best but it looks great without doing so.
