780 worth it still?

NakedChicken

I have a reference gtx 680 currently and it's 2 gb frame buffer is really bottle necking me, not to mention the blower cooler is absurdly loud. My brother bought me a 1440p panel for Christmas and I have been playing games at 1080p on it. I found a Pny 780 for a pretty good price and I was wondering what you guys think about it. I plan on selling my 680 to a friend too.

I know the 970 would be a better option but I cant afford it and do not want another reference card(the only ones I have actually seen for $329) I don't want to buy a 290 or wait for the 300 series because I just bought a shield portable.

So what do you think?

Btw games I play: Far Cry 4, Bf4. Arma, Dayz, Fifa, Nfs Rivals(the game hardly works on my 2 gb becausse of awful devs)

Can confirm 780 is a great card. @1440p ~100fps on high for BF4 conquest large. Arma is very server dependent as you probably know, su matra wasteland: 55-110 fps on high settings.

Yeah 780 is a great card, if you can get it significantly cheaper than a 970 then go for it.

100% agreed. the bandwidth is overall better, and the production cost is significantly higher than the 970. if the price is 50 dollars or less than the 970, than the 780 is the better purchase.

$286.50 after rebate is a great price on a GTX 780, and I don't think the 970 is $50 better (or $75 better if you want one of the higher performing models like the G1 Gaming).

I can tell you it takes 2 - 780's to fully max BF4 at 1440p on some maps.  @ 1440p all settings Ultra, 4xMSAA, 100% resolution scale.  On a heavy foliage map like guilin peaks I can just hit 96fps with drops into the low 80's (I have a Korean Xstar overclocked to 96hz) with full 99% GPU usage on both cards.  On a more desert based level like Silk Road I stay locked @ 96hz with about 70% usage on both cards.

VRAM use is usually around 2600mb on most levels.  FYI - I play only 64 player conquest large and both cards are overclocked....they boost to around 1100mhz.....Hope that helps give you an idea what you need.

Mothership - 3770k @ 4.5 - 980ti SLI - Z77UD5

Protégé - FX8350 @ 4.8 - Fury X - CHVFZ

The 780 is still a powerful card but I would go with a 970 if it's cheaper.

I would go with a 290X Lightning since it is only $60 more on Newegg and has ACTUALLY got a usable 4GB VRAM
