Microphone questions?

Corruption

My original plan was the AT2020 USB for online gaming or YouTube (which is a huge maybe) but now I saw Linus's review on the Modmic 4.0 and was convinced that It would be much more convenient and it wouldn't need a mic arm and wouldn't get in my way, but I'm not sure. At2020 is twice as expensive so please leave your honest review or opinion

I personally am getting the AT2020 USB as it looks great, and im sure it would sound better than a modmic.

Where in the hell are you buying that the modmic is $100 O_o

The AT2020 is INFINITELY better mic quality but the Modmic is a lot more convenient

I would highly prefer a desk mic over a modmic of some sort.

The flexibility of either putting it on my desk, or let it hang over my desk is a huge thing for me.

I don't care a ton about habing the mic on my face (basically, almost) so I would go for the AT2020.

(not regarding sound quality though)

But that is all my opinion :)

The modmic is like $50. It's $42.50 plus shipping which brings it to about $50 for the muteless and $50 plus shipping for the mute mic. I got in on the preorder sale so I got the more expensive one for $50 including shipping.

ModMic doesn't always sound great, so if you're recording it is best to get a USB mic with the boom arm. If you're just communicating with other people online, it is adequate and a space saver if you're concerned about space.

Personally if you're just starting out, a blue snowball will be enough and that's about $50 give or take. The modmic is great if you have a lot of background noise and is more convenient but sometimes your onboard audio for mic isn't that great and causes static so a $10 external soundcard might be needed to get rid of that static. If you're getting a desktop mic like the snowball or the AT2020 then it's ideal to get a stand as well so that will cost more. You can leave it on your desk but it will likely pick up your keyboard and other background sounds.

I have a modmic and am looking to replace it. It sounds good but I dislike having a second cable to manage. It just gets in the way. I got it back when I was big into console gaming and needed a mic to go with the Astro Mixamp. For PC use it is ok but I stopped recommending it a while ago because a desktop usb mic looks more convenient and it looks easier to setup for better sound. A Blue Snowball would be more than adequate for Skype, Ventrilo, Teamspeak, or whatever else you would use for gaming. It will also be great for youtube commentary. $50-$60 for the Snowball vs $100-$130 for the AT2020. If you get into the youtube thing you can use that money saved by getting the Snowball and get a better stand and windscreen.

EDIT: Also forgot. NannerBeans is correct about the onboard audio. It can be hit or miss. My modmic sounds good on my Asus M4A785TD-M EVO but sounds really bad on my ASRock H97 Anniversary. On the Asus everything sounds like it should. No static, pops, or hums and the volume level is right where is should be. On the ASrock the volume is way too low and it has a faint hum.

I use the AT2020. It sounds great out of the box, and with minor editing, it really can blow you away. I spent $40ish more on my mic and bought some upgrades. Here is the links to everything.

Why no? Snowball is more than enough for gaming. Why spend more when the youtube thing is "a huge maybe"
