Before i start

I've used intel amd and nvidia that last 10 years. So i'm not a fan buy of anything.

Am I the only one that think that Nvidia has become a dick the last 1½ year?

AMD makes mantel and Nvidia no we don't support that. and the AMD makes freesync no we don't want to be a part of it.

The mantel okay i can get over that. But free-sync and G-sync i hate that, Why can't they just use one of them. So now i'm looking for a new monitor, but i'll be locked in. at the moment i have a R9 290. So if i use 500-600 USD, on a monitor i'm locked in to free-sync. and i normal keep a monitor for 4-6 years.

I just hate this at the moment ?!?!?!??!?!

- Intel has absolutely NO authority when it comes to making a low-level API for Nvidia, the 2 companies are not related so I don't know why you brought that up and the reason Nvidia isn't making it is because DX12 will bring what mantle brings to the table only without being AMD GCN exclusive so there is no real point in making a mantle-like nvidia only API when DX12 is right around the corner

- Why can't they just use one of either Freesync or G-Sync? It's called competition and you need to remember that these are both companies striving for profit. It's not about playing nice

- Yes you are tied to a monitor type but there are loads of things like that. EVGA is Nvidia exclusive and Sapphire is AMD exclusive, Nvidia has CUDA and AMD has openCL and you are bound to whichever one you need. THis is not special and NOT a reason to scold Nvidia for

Honestly there are only 2 real reasons to think Nvidia is a dick:

- The 970 VRAM issue

- The G-Sync module potentially being unnecessary but that has yet to be proven/researched. The modded drivers thing is already debunked

Nvidia makes everything proprietary. Yes they are a selfish company.

It's not a matter of being selfish. A company like Nvidia wants profit, simple as. Yes they could EASILY be more flexible in things like that but at the end of the day they want profit, which is what you would want too.

Personally I think Nvidia needs to stop being the way they are but from their POV they at least have a valid point for doing what they do (Not counting the VRAM issue, etc.). I wish they were a bit more focused towards the needs of the consumer like AMD is but they are not "selfish". They are just more profit-oriented than AMD is

@Archangel1994 Pretty sure the G-Sync module isn't just a form of DRM for Nvidia... I'd imagine it works without it on the laptop because the display is driven differently than with a standalone monitor.

I do not know enough about the G-Sync module to go in depth but from what I've read it should require the module regardless of it being a laptop monitor or desktop monitor

The whole modded driver thing was already debunked though as far as I've read

Yes Gsync works on laptop screens because they have had the vblank feature (intended for power saving) well before Gsync was a thing. The module in desktop monitors is not a DRM device.

Good to know

In a perfect world, Nvidia could enable Free-sync on Geforce cards, allowing their users to get the best of both worlds. They might lose some money on the G-sync module side, but that would surely encourage people to buy Nvidia GPUs. Moreover, that could work out as a good PR move. I doubt it will happen though.

Nvidia could license the tech, but hey choose not to. They could even give themselves a couple of years head-start with it but they choose not to. There is a reason why some Nvidia tech never really become mainstream or standard.

Have they become dickish in the last 1-1/2 years? No, its been a while longer than that. I get why they are doing it, but it just sucks for the consumer.

If free sync really becomes widely supported, which it could and then you will see them support it in their video cards. If they don't, then its a bad business decision on their part.

The problem with propriety technology as mentioned by others already, is that it hinders the adoption of that technology in software. Just look at how many amazing games we have with Physx ...

If Nvidia would licence out their technology, it would make it much more appealing for software to use it.

Linus is my fetish.

Heck, some of the physx problem can be solved by allowing consumers to pair a nvidia card with their amd card for physx work, but they don't even want that to happen.

...

This is the cost of capitalism.

Or the lack of competition in the markets.

@mrkvik79

If you look at Nvidia's official specs on their website, you might notice a sneaky addition on the left hand column under "supported technologies." http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-970/specifications

Nvidia have said in the recent past that they will not be outfitting their graphic cards to ever be compatible with display port 1.2A, yet lo-and-behold they are somehow supporting Adaptive sync (which is part of displayport 1.2A)?

I'm starting to wonder if anyone at Nvidia talks to anyone at Nvidia...

Oh no no, just that when i saw it. It could have been summed up in a few sentences that's all. I thought it was almost bite head-offie if that makes any sense. But no worries haha. *crawls back under rock*
