depends on the res. but 970


CPU Intel I7-4700MQ @2.4 ghz, turbos to 3.4 

Motherboard  whatever toshiba put in the thing

RAM 8GB 1600mhz 

GPU  Nvidia Geforce GT 740M  

Storage 750Gb 5400rpm   

Cooling  Crappy laptop fan 

Operating System  windows 8 64 bit

970 > 780. So, unless the 780 is significantly cheaper, go with the 970.

970 0.5gb more vram

1GB more. It does have 4GB, it's just the bandwidth on the last half GB is lower.

The 970 is a pretty solid card regardless of issues with that bandwidth. Unless you're running 4K, the 970 should be fine. If you were running higher than 1440p, you would want a better card, most likely.

That being said, if you want to save some money, the R9 290X or even the R9 290 are pretty solid cards for a lot less.

I don't know why people are even bringing up the VRAM issues here, even if you considered the 970 to have only 3.5GB of "useful" VRAM, that's still more than a 780...

 

EDIT: Go with the 970 unless the 780 is significantly cheaper, in which case you can decide if you want more performance (970) or to save money (780)
