Hello,

I have a Gigabyte Windforce GTX 780 GHz Edition. I just upgraded to a 3 monitor setup for work. I didn't really think about gaming with 3 monitors (all 1080p monitors) in surround, but I tried it and it is something I may consider playing. Now, I was thinking about upgrading my GPU, but I came across a deal for the same Gigabyte GPU that I own...about $300. Should I go ahead and SLI? Are there still issues with certain games and dual card set-ups? Should I upgrade to a 980?

Thank you in advance for any and all help, suggestions and advice!

$300 is about the normal price for a 780 these days. I'd SLI them and see how it goes, considering that a single 980 wont perform that much better.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

A single 980 is not worth the upgrade cost from a 780. Get a second 780 and SLI I would say

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

Go ahead and SLI your 780. The only issue is game support, which most games today support SLI.

Cool. Yeah, I am seriously considering it. I just don't want to have any issues with games and SLI. Are the problems no as common as they used to be?

EDIT:

I know we cannot tell the future or anything, but how long do you think 2 780's will be relevant, as far as gaming goes?

there's only about 20% performance difference between a 780 and a 980 with the only substantial benefit being an extra 1gb of vram.

but you'd be fine in almost all games at the moment with 3gb at 5960X 1080p. so personally I'd sli them.

Gaming PC: • AMD Ryzen 7 3900x • 16gb Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 3200mhz • Founders Edition 2080ti • 2x Crucial 1tb nvme ssd • NZXT H1• Logitech G915TKL • Logitech G Pro • Asus ROG XG32VQ • SteelSeries Arctis Pro Wireless

Laptop: MacBook Pro M1 512gb

What games do you play?

The issue with SLI (and Xfire) is frame timings which can cause stuttering, but that has become exponentially better over the years.

Thanks.

I play everything from Skyrim and Far Cry to Battlefield and DayZ and from NBA 2K to the Total War series. I pretty much play whatever.

The first three games support SLI and there's a relatively simple method to enabling SLI in DayZ.

EDIT: Not to say NBA or Total War don't-- I'm just unaware if they do.
