Used ATH M50's?

I generally hate these threads, but I'm not really up to what the used headphone market will give price wise.

I am currently trying to sell my new AKG Q701's.

I have an offer for ATH M50's plus cash.

How much could I get for the ATH M50's? What would you guys pay if you were in the market?

I know it varies by market, but a ball park figure would be helpful.

Thanks!

It's likely the pads are rock hard already so I would say $80 since I rather have the Sony MDR7506 anyway and that's around $80 usually. I would say the Q701 is worth about $120-$130 so $40-$50 added in is about right. Oh but that's in the US. Canada prices vary greatly but the difference should still be in the ball park of $40-$50.

Ball park figure on such transactions usually works something like this:  Brand new, full price = x1.0.  Used in very good, working condition, half price = x0.5.  Trade in with the idea that the trade would later be sold to someone else, quarter price = x0.25 (allowing you to resell at the "used price" and make a profit).  With the M50/x going for around US$160, used would be $80, trade in used would be $40.   Adjust up or down as you see fit.

The question for me is, why do you want to sell Q701?

I don't like them. The ear cups are uncomfortable and I'm not a huge fan of the clamping force.

The question is, are you interested in keeping the M50s or selling them to make up the difference?  If you have an interest in them then I would suggest that's not a bad deal.  If you are just going to try and flip them to make up the difference in cash, I'm not so sure...  What's the M50 sell for in Canada?

Nope I'd just sell them off. I have no real need for an over ear headphone at the moment. I'd probably buy a custom set of DT770's down the line.

M50's are around $140 USD, so $175 CAD. Plus tax, say $200. I figure I could get at least $80 for them, maybe $100?

If it's $100 plus the headphones take it and run. That is way more than it's worth. I was talking about used prices in the US and the Q701 is worth pretty much nothing atm. They are usually $150 or so but right now they aren't worth as much.

That half off for used is highly inaccurate. It's usually closer to 30% off but it varies from headphone to headphone. The only way you get accurate values is to look at Amazon used prices and prices on other forums. I usually undercut Amazon's lowest price and that's usually pretty accurate.

I agree... with everything you just said.

I guess I should have said "in general", i.e. not headphones in particular.  Further those numbers are what I would roughly expect if I were the one being asked to take the trade, not as a customer wanting to buy them.  Obviously supply and demand can cause prices to fluctuate, as you've pointed out, but as a rule of thumb, for buying and reselling any used item, I think my figures were pretty sound.  Plus they favor the party taking responsibility for having to resell them, and gamble on the investment.  Amazon tends to command higher used prices because of a perceived security in making the transaction through them.

But that's the problem. That's not fair to the seller. Yes Amazon's prices are higher which is why I undercut them but it's pretty much never 50% off. I am probably the most experianced buyer/seller on this forum and I have rarely gotten things for 50% off.

Your missing the point, I think.  Have you ever *traded* in an item on Amazon?  Here, for example (I just picked one at random), are the AKG K272 "HD".  They sell on Prime for 153.30, brand new.  Used prices, if you want to buy one, are $104.99 and up.  Trade in, on the other hand?  $49.53 in the form of a gift card.  That's new at x1.0, used at x0.68, and trade in value is only x0.32 of the new price and less than half of what they could/will resell them for "used".

http://www.amazon.com/AKG-272-HD-High-Definition-Headphones/dp/B0012XZAXG/ref=sr_1_31?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1422507400&sr=1-31

Q701 (white) are trending similarly, with a new price $184.95, used price from $163.97 (Amazon warehouse), and trade in of $78.75.

While what a used (anything) might sell for is again, dictated a large degree by market supply and demand, Amazon carries extra overhead expense (compared to an individual buying/selling a single used pair) and due to the size of their customer base feel they can charge perhaps a bit more than the 50% "rule of thumb" that I suggested to compensate for it, and still turn a profit.  But none of us are Amazon.

The OP specified he's not really interested in *buying* a pair of used M50 headphones for himself.  Rather, he's interested in taking them in as part trade to help facilitate the transaction with the plan of selling them again later himself to (hopefully) recoup the balance of his target.  25% of the new value of the M50 is the deal I would shoot for with hopes of selling them at at least 50% of new value for a quick, easy "cash in hand".  As I said, "Adjust up or down as you see fit.", YMMV.  Ideally the party with the M50s will choke up a bit more cash on the deal, making it easier to get close to that $200 target the OP desires.  Even if he has to slide upwards from that 25%, they should still be a fair sale at $100.

For my personal situation it's worth noting that any metric found on Amazon is, really, pointless. They're not available to me, or my potential buyers directly. They'd have to have it shipped to the US (or, pay extra to have it shipped Internationally), and go pick it up. Time is money. Exchange rate is low. All which must be factored in.

Geographic location is also key. For example here I can sell a 7970 for a decent chunk of change. My dad, however, lives in a small town and just picked up 2 for $60. Total.

I'm looking for the quickest sale possible, as audio stuff isn't the quickest mover.

So, what do you think the chances are of someone picking up the M50's for say $80 US? No box, just the headphones and included accessories.

$80 is a quick sale for those (assuming working in good condition) on ebay right now, $16 below what the Amazon warehouse has them for, so I would say chances are good... assuming prices stay pretty much where they are (there isn't suddenly a sale on brand new ones or anything).

In Canada you would probably be able to sell those but in the US it would take a while. There was one on head fi for $80 and it still hasn't sold.
