OneDrive initially had this back in Windows 7 days (well it was called SkyDrive). The feature was dropped due to many issues.

Looks like they fixed them or took a different approach for implementing this feature.

works like a champ now, and easy to setup

Tut is easy, its on my channel or

right click onedrive icon

settings

check the box "let me use onedrive to fetch any files from me pc"

I refuse to use cloud (hate that term) storage without physically owning the server that the files are on and using a vpn to access it. This doesn't seem to fit both of those criteria.

it fits the first one, your not uploading your drive , your remotly accessing your drive , your pc needs to be on.

although you can't vpn (yet, i hope).

Isn't One Drive usually a service like Dropbox and Google Drive where your data is stored remotely. Nice option included anyway

Yes, but this is an option in it for when your pc is on you can access those files,  so if your pc is on you can still acces the files you uploaded but not yoru pc files

So, it's exactly like running an FTP server on your own machine, which is what you should be doing instead of putting your data in 'the cloud' anyway, except this is different cause... uhm...

this is like a hybrid xD

It's a shame onedrive as like 20 Kb/s download speeds

.....it is not even close to that lol...i get around 15mbs from it..

Most people get no more than 500 kb/s, but a lot get less than that. I've never gotten more than 50kb/s

I could see this being useful.

My PC is on all the time anyway, so being able to grab files from it from my Surface sounds very nice.

I also use OneDrive as my main cloud storage for small files to sync back and forth, and some OneNote stuff. So swapping/getting used to OneDrive isn't a problem for me.

Just wonder how its done, as currently I'm not 100% how I would go about setting up something like an FTP server as I'm a student. At home I could set up some Port forwarding and be done with it, but I have a lot less options when the internet is shared over an entire building.

If this gets around that, that would be great but I'm not so sure how it would.

That's kinda of cool. I use Tonido right now for this feature. It's pretty handy....

For the people saying it's like FTP or VPN whatever to access the file, you're right in a way. But mr.Joe Blow or my dad ain't gonna setup an FTP server. It's the same features, but without the hassle.

@Arty

Have you check if the files you have access from your PC are now also stored in the onedrive servers?    Like if you try to access the same file twice, the 2nd time you get it much faster because now a copy is stored in the servers?

Mystery is the source of all true science.

i have not, and i hope not xD, i would doubt it because you only get a limited space, my one drive is 30gbs, so i wonder if they will add a cache option in the future.

Regarding your poll, I don't think it is cool or useless, at least for me. But since Windows 8 has this feature I thought everyone would have known it would be in W10.

Edit: Actually, I'm not certain on sharing files from OneDrive between different machines but it seems logical that it would have just be tied to your MicroSoft account anyway? I don't bother with any cloud storage services myself so I don't really know how each service works.

If I can force which devices have access to my cloud, not just "devices on the home network," I'd like this feature. I have a tablet, PC and laptop, all running Windows. However, I'm not the only one with a Windows device in my house, and I have stuff I would never share lol.

if you have to insist you think for yourself, i'm not going to believe you.
