WTF? It didn't look like that the last time I was using the preview. By the looks of it I shouldn't do the update.

What? So they aren't going for this look? But the mess above?  :(

Yes...

Apparently Microsoft though it would be a good idea to have the area for live tiles be static. No matter if you got 0 tiles or 100 tiles, it always takes up as much space now. You get a scroll bar on the side if you got a lot of tiles pinned, and you get empty space if you got only a few tiles pinned.

They did however fix that super annoying rearrangement thing they had going before.

It's idiotic. I really hope they fix it.

The only thing i dont like about this update build is the lack of resizing in the start menu, they probably disabled it atm for bugs other than that i dont jave problems with anything else, though the current setting menu lacks a shit ton of stuff compared to control panal and is unacceptable if they want to replace control panel with it, hopefully they fix it before release because its retarded has such overlap

this is one of the greatest thing that has happened to me recently, and it happened on this forum, those involved have my eternal gratitude http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/198850-update-alex-got-his-moto-g2-lets-get-a-moto-g-for-alexgoeshigh-unofficial/ :')

i use to have the second best link in the world here, but it died ;_; its a 404 now but it will always be here

So I have tried using Windows 10 for the entire day today (I deliberately tested lots of things, I didn't just do the stuff I normally do) and these are the things I found annoying/bad and that needs to be changed or improved. Some are far more important than others and I am not going in some special order here.

Right clicking is very inconsistent. In a lot of apps it brings up an extra menu and in a lot of places (including the new settings app) it does absolutely nothing. For example right clicking in the maps app does absolutely nothing. At first I thought my mouse was broken because I had used other apps like the calendar before and it brought up extra menus in those. I don't like having to guess where I can find settings in apps, and it doesn't even seem like Microsoft themselves can be consistent.

**************************************

Clicking with the scroll wheel in the PDF reading app does nothing. I don't know if I am the minority here but when I scroll I like doing it by clicking the scroll wheel and then move my mouse up/down.

In case you don't know what I mean, this is what your mouse cursor looks like in Chrome when you click the scroll wheel.

post-216-0-14291100-1422113432.png

Another thing I dislike with the PDF app is that it takes a lot of clicks to go to a bookmark. You need a total of 4 clicks to actually go to the bookmark (the first click is a right click as well), and when you are at the bookmark you have to click twice to be able to scroll again (you click to exit the bookmarks menu). So it takes 6 clicks to do the same thing it takes 1 click to do in Foxit.

**************************************

The calendar app only support Microsoft's calendar.

**************************************

Cortana doesn't work in Sweden. It's not just that I can't give voice commands to it in Swedish, it refuses to do anything even if I try speaking/typing in English.

**************************************

It would be nice to have the time left on a timer show up in the live tile.

**************************************

The way the settings move in for windowed metro apps looks weird (video link). They just fly in from the far right of the screen. Submenus appear very nicely but the main settings menu looks awful.

**************************************

Like you said, you can't resize the start menu. That's really annoying, ugly and a waste of space. I don't know why they did this because it wasn't like this in previous builds.

**************************************

When you want to press the windows key and start typing a program, there are two overlapping menus opening. It just looks awkward.

This is a video of me (video link) pressing the windows key on my keyboard, typing in paint and opening it like I normally would. I don't get why there is another menu appearing.

**************************************

Some apps have way too many menus and they are spread out. The email app has a menu on the left (inside the app), a menu in the top right (for the old charm bar) and a menu at the bottom if you right click. If you open up the settings (from the old charm bar button) then you get an extra menu on the right side of the app. Do we really need menus on all 4 sides of the app? It's just confusing. The email app seems to be the worst offender but I found myself going "in which menu did I find that setting again...?" on a few occasions.

**************************************

I can't find the option to add another folder for the gallery app to search for images. I found

Sources

Pictures

C:\Users\Martin\Pictures

in the settings but I can't change anything.

**************************************

They started adding support for more codecs but never finished the job. The music app doesn't support FLAC but WMP does. Neither of them supports Vorbis.

The video app supports MKV now but it doesn't support any subtitles in the MKV file, it won't play anything with FLAC in it (it just refuses to play even the video which it does support). It doesn't support more advanced things like 10bit H.264 or MKV's ordered chapters with segment linking either. If you got a chapter in a different file, it will just play right past it without fetching that video.

There is no support for WebM anywhere to be found either. Not in WMP, not in Internet Explorer, not in WMP and not in Explorer.

**************************************

There are no pictures for RSS feeds in the news app. You can get pictures if you select one of the handful of sites Microsoft suggests, but if you add let's say Anandtech you don't get any images. You only get text and you get your articles in their own little section (you have to click each individual source to see articles from that specific source) in small squares.

**************************************

I don't like how OneDrive links are generated. Dropbox links looks like this:"dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/<userID>/<filename>". OneDrive has a much longer user ID, it has some info about what type of file it is (????), it has some authentication key and a bunch of other stuff. These links goes to the same file that I have shared (slightly NSFW).

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=49FA9BB1CF8BF5AC!648&authkey=!AFi05p03Cp3uov8&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/23191353/Elementals.jpg

There is an option to shorten the URL somewhere (I know I have seen it on the website but can't find it in the right click menu in Explorer) but it is still very cryptic. The drawback of this is that I can't generate the link before the upload is fully done. With dropbox I will know what the link will be, so I can just generate it before the upload is done. That's so stupid. Give me the damn link before the upload is done Microsoft. It's kind of a big deal when I am uploading something that will take like an hour to finish uploading.

**************************************

The new settings app is terrible. If they are planning on replacing the control panel with this then they have a long way to go. I could not for the life of me find where to change the IP on my network interface. At some point I managed to find a button that just opened up the old control panel and from there it was super easy. Left clicking on the network icon in the bottom right also takes you to this new settings app as well, which means that you can no longer connect/disconnect from a VPN easily. You have to go into the terrible settings app and do like 5 more clicks than in Windows 7. It's a huge waste of time.

**************************************

Turning the off the PC now requires this sequence of button presses:

  • Win
  • Arrow Down
  • Arrow Right
  • Enter
  • Arrow Down
  • Arrow Down
  • Enter
Instead of:
  • Win
  • Arrow Right
  • Enter

Most of these things are just flaws in the programs that comes with the OS though, so I can easily just install third party programs to fix them.

Right now I am leaning towards upgrading from Windows 7 at release but Microsoft has a huge amount of areas where they could improve.

I can't find any place to send in some of this feedback though. Maybe @GoodBytes knows.

It is because it is a mix of old (Windows 8) and new apps.

Clicking with the scroll wheel in the PDF reading app does nothing. I don't know if I am the minority here but when I scroll I like doing it by clicking the scroll wheel and then move my mouse up/down.

The calendar app only support Microsoft's calendar.

PDF app is still Windows 8 one. But post it as feedback.

Calendar app is also Win8 version. The version demoed at the presentation is not there yet. Notice how the mail app was not refereed as Mail, but Outlook. And there is no Outlook app.

Cortana doesn't work in Sweden. It's not just that I can't give voice commands to it in Swedish, it refuses to do anything even if I try speaking/typing in English.

Yes, MS said at the presentation that it works for U.S only and more regions to come during the beta. If you set your Windows region to U.S, restart, it will work (still has limitation and bugs due to the work in progress. I did a post on it showing the known by Microsoft issues of Windows 10 and Cortana)

It would be nice to have the time left on a timer show up in the live tile.

I dont' really understand, but you can enjoy the new tray clock panel, by doing the following:

-> Regedit

-> Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell

-> Create a new DWORD with name: UseWin32TrayClockExperience, and value: 0

That is all. Now click on the system clock.

The way the settings move in for windowed metro apps looks weird (video link). They just fly in from the far right of the screen. Submenus appear very nicely but the main settings menu looks awful.

I found it very cool actually. Very unexpected. :)

Not sure I would want that daily, but it did give a smile.

Like you said, you can't resize the start menu. That's really annoying, ugly and a waste of space. I don't know why they did this because it wasn't like this in previous builds.

You can switch to the "older" Start Menu

-> Regedit

-> Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advance

-> Create a new DWORD with name: EnableXamlStartMenu, and value: 0

-> Restart (or sign out, or restart explorer)

When you want to press the windows key and start typing a program, there are two overlapping menus opening. It just looks awkward.

This is a video of me (video link) pressing the windows key on my keyboard, typing in paint and opening it like I normally would. I don't get why there is another menu appearing.

Yea, I agree. Very strange. But Win+Q jumps only to it.

And if you disable the search box and button, and click on the start menu, well you have a nice little mess. at least now.

Some apps have way too many menus and they are spread out. The email app has a menu on the left (inside the app), a menu in the top right (for the old charm bar) and a menu at the bottom if you right click. That is how it is in Windows 8.

AHA! Now we all know your name! You put the path to your account! :P

The picture app on my side says "Coming soon" on many things. So I am lost.

I am not sure if it's because the apps will be remade, or support is very basic, and that is what we will only get. Better push on the feedback for this.

It's not complete. Many things are still missing.

Turning the off the PC now requires this sequence of button presses:

Yea i have complained about that. When I did IT work, restarting a computer lab set of computers one-by-one (say just a row) was easy in Windows 7, as you can go on each system and rapidly do the keyboard comb. Windows 8 is a bit more of a pain, same for Windows 10, I feel like I am doing the Konami code. I complained about this. Hopefully more people add feedback on this, so that Microsoft does something about it.

But you can Do Win+X -> Up -> Up -> Right -> Down -> Down -> Down -> Enter. Yea, I know, I am not helping. :)

I can't find any place to send in some of this feedback though. Maybe @GoodBytes knows.

Feedback app. Open the Start Menu (assuming default layout), on the tiles section, scroll down, and you'll see a tile: "Windows Feedb", click on it.

Or you can search for "Windows feedback" and you have it.

Windows 10 is far from being released. I also hate the newer new icons of this build... makes me think I am on a 16 color display. I mean come on! Hopefully that will change.

Thanks for the reply and the work-around tips.

Hehe I don't care about my name showing (as long as it's not my last name). Pretty sure I have posted it dozens of times before.

Well... Time to start submitting feedback.

Even with all the stuff I listed there are a lot of things I really like and it still seems like Windows 10 will end up being pretty damn good. I mean, most of my complaints are about the apps included in the OS, and those can be uninstalled and Windows 7 completely lacked that functionality to begin with. I never used the Metro apps in Windows 8 because they were full screen. Now that they can be windowed I might actually use some of them like the news app and the maps app.

I think Microsoft is recoding everything into XAML / Windows Presentation Foundation and Universal Apps.

As both platform are designed by default to be high-DPI aware, and universal apps helps Microsoft do what they wants where all apps are the same on any Windows device, is smart. Also, does a kind of demos to developers about Universal Apps. Smart move. And you end up with Microsoft actually use the framework and see where it needs to be improved (in terms of power, flexibility and performance) as they go, and probably make the Microsoft devs life much easier for future support. Ideally, I wish Universal apps doesn't have that splash screen, and loads really instantly.
