I recently came by a relatively new forum platform called Discourse.

http://www.discourse.org/

I was wondering if the forum devs have seen this, and if one day this could be a possibility for LTT forums. From the looks of the website, and a few forums I have visited, it looks and operates really nice. PLus it is free and open, which is always good.

100% Open Source, Trust System, Real Time Notifications, Plugins, One Click Upgrades, Easy Spam Cleanup, and a lot more!

Thoughts?

As someone that has done it. Changing forums is literally the biggest pain in the ass ever. I was ready to slit my wrists after changing a SMF forum over to IPB. Considering the  size of LTT, it aint happening

The size of LTT is probably a bigger reason to change than to stay with the current platform. The more people that sign up the worse it gets, it really wasn't built to scale. I personally think that LTT could benefit hugely from a more modern updated forum platform.

Eh...it doesn't look user friendly at all, or very customizable for the average joe.

Not a developer so I wouldn't know, but being open sourced would allow the devs to really implement anything they wanted. Discourse is probably not the only modern forum platform anyways, but it is still important to think about how LTT forums could be upgraded.

Yes, but that is for people with the know-how. For the average joe, this is entirely unappealing.

You dont think IPB was built to scale..... You may want to do some more reasearch into what there is out there. IPB is the best it gets pretty much, going to a "new" thing is a terrible idea. The forums work fine as is

IPB already has alot of people behind it and a lot of plug ins and support, open source wouldnt be able to add anything IPB doesnt already

You are correct, I haven't done any research on it. I was going by user experience, and from what I have seen I don't think that this forum could handle x5 times the current users we have now (I hope it gets that big!).

Discourse was basically something that caught my eye, on what new it brings to the table in terms of community engagement. Maybe in the future there will be a better option, but Discourse seems to be the most popular modern forum platform.

Seen a few peoples thoughts on this both here and on Teamspeak and at this stage, no we would not look at changing over. There is a number of reasons for this:

  • Investment in the existing platform: both financially and with man hours we have invested a lot into IPB paying for addons and also setting things up and tweaking the software.
  • Conversion - converting IPB over from vB was not only a pain but an ongoing pain where content, moderation actions and other features have not ported over correctly.

There are other reasons but I don't have the time to explain at the moment :P

I'm not sure the first reason is a good one since just because you are invested in something if it does not work it is not logical to keep investing more into it thinking it will fix it. However I do fully agree with the second reason it could basically be assume it would be a start over for the forum which is not really the best thing to have happen
