Shin etsu is the best. Same temps as Arctic Silver 5 without the 200 hour burn in time. read the 80 way thermal paste test.

I use MX4 and I like it. I have heard of people using IC Diamond direct on the die and they have marked the die because there is a errr... Diamond component to IC Diamond and diamonds are hard stuff... :)

Well if your after market cooler has a heat pipes exposed then i would recommend Noctua's NT-H1 or IC diamond. If your cooler has a flat surface with no heat-pipes exposed i would recommend IC Diamond, Noctua's NT-H1 or Indigo Extreme( Indigo Extreme is for experienced enthusiasts only).

A water-cooled mid-tier gaming PC.

I've used arctic before and had problems before. Most likely because I either mounted my cooler incorrectly or used too little or too much.
Currently using IC diamond and worked first time, no problem.

Linus got a whole box of IC diamond, as he showed in 1 of his videos.

That's the video, Linus' personally choice. I used Arctic Silver 5 for my current build but if I were to do it again I would use IC Diamond, but in all actuality as long as it's well known (decent) thermal paste you'll be fine.

My best experience has be AS5. MX-4 has served me good as well while I was out of AS5. Those are the only two I have tried so the only two I can recommend as they performed a few C better than most stock paste that is applied. AS5 is conductive though so you have to be careful to not put too much on. I can't remember but I don't believe MX-4 is.

IC Diamond contains diamond particulate (surprise), which certainly is capable of scratching things given it's the hardest material on earth.  It's not really a problem used on a heat shield, but it's not a good idea to use it directly with a CPU/GPU die.

Very thin spread, no cure time, cheaper than AS5 and comes in a bigger tube at least where I live. Just a random tip - apply it onto the heatsink if it's HDT. I observed that it spreads so thin that if you paste it on the CPU, it might not fill the groves in between the heatpipes.
